Y'shtola, Night's Blessed: The Esper Life Tax

A sharp Esper control deck that can answer almost anything, but it has no fast way to turn Y'shtola's two damage into a win.

Y'shtola, Night's Blessed card

Y'shtola, Night's Blessed deals 2 damage to each opponent whenever you cast a noncreature spell with mana value 3 or more, and draws you a card at the end of any turn where somebody lost 4 or more life. The deck is built to cast those spells all game: 30 of its noncreature spells qualify (counting Torment of Hailfire and Outrageous Robbery with X of 1 or more), and several of them (Force of Negation, Snuff Out, Flare of Malice, Mindbreak Trap) can be cast for free.

It plays as control: 12 removal spells, 7 counters and 6 board wipes keep the table quiet while Y'shtola chips away. What decides its games is the finish. Two damage at a time is 20 triggers to kill three players from 40, so the deck spends a lot of turns ahead on board and not yet winning.

What works

What holds it back

No clean way to close

Y'shtola deals 2 damage at a time, and the deck's other finishers are Torment of Hailfire, Talion and Scrawling Crawler. Once the table is under control, games still drag for several turns while you ping 2 at a time, which is where a control deck gets answered or loses a race.

Six board wipes for fourteen creatures

The deck runs Y'shtola, Emet-Selch, Talion, G'raha Tia and eleven more creatures, then six board wipes. Avatar's Wrath spares one creature, but Cleansing Nova, Crux of Fate, Final Judgment, Supreme Verdict and an overloaded Damn take your own board with everyone else's. The template's range is 2 to 4, and every extra wipe is a turn spent resetting instead of casting the spells that make Y'shtola deal damage.

Slots that do the least for the plan

Hildibrand Manderville pumps tokens the deck barely makes. Treacherous Greed needs a creature that dealt damage this turn, and most turns the only one is Y'shtola. Midnight Clock's big turn shuffles away the graveyard Emet-Selch casts from. Mistrise Village is the quiet one: it enters untapped only with a Mountain or a Forest, so in Esper it always enters tapped.

The boost: 6 swaps for $19.00

What we'd change, one card out for one card in, priced at the cheapest paper printing as of October 28, 2026.

  1. Final Judgment card
    Out: Final Judgment
    Sanguine Bond card
    In: Sanguine Bond · $5.61

Every Y'shtola trigger gains 2 life, so each one also makes an opponent lose 2 more. It triggers her when you cast it.

  2. Crux of Fate card
    Out: Crux of Fate
    Debt to the Deathless card
In: Debt to the Deathless · $0.41

Each opponent loses twice X and you gain all of it. With Sanguine Bond out, X of 3 is 36 life lost across a four-player table.

  3. Treacherous Greed card
    Out: Treacherous Greed
    Memory Deluge card
    In: Memory Deluge · $0.33

Two cards at instant speed, then flashback for two more. Both casts trigger her, so one card feeds her end-step draw twice.

  4. Midnight Clock card
    Out: Midnight Clock
    Archmage of Runes card
In: Archmage of Runes · $3.28

Your instants and sorceries cost 1 less and each one draws a card. This deck runs 29 of them.

  5. Hildibrand Manderville card
    Out: Hildibrand Manderville
    Flawless Maneuver card
    In: Flawless Maneuver · $7.59

Free while Y'shtola is out, so it pings for 2 at no cost and saves your creatures from a destroy wipe.

    Out: Mistrise Village
    Shipwreck Marsh card
    In: Shipwreck Marsh · $1.78

Taps for blue or black and enters untapped once you have two other lands, which is most turns after your second.
