Current
Every set we cover that is currently Standard-legal. There is no rotation in 2026, and the format still reaches back to Wilds of Eldraine (September 2023), which is why two 2023 sets are here and three are not. The next rotation moves to February 2027, when 2025–2027 sets will be the legal pool: everything below from 2023 and 2024 rotates out then, while Foundations stays until at least 2029.
Wilds of Eldraine

Magic: The Gathering Foundations
Released Nov 15, 2024 · Legal until 2029
The set built to stay. Standard-legal until at least 2029, with no signature mechanic by design, the best starting point for a first draft.

Marvel Super Heroes
Released June 26, 2026

Rotated Out
Sets that were Standard-legal on release and have since left it, across several rotations going back to 2020. The 2021 to 2023 sets here went out at three you may remember: Dominaria United in September 2022, Bloomburrow in August 2024 and Edge of Eternities in July 2025. Which rotation took a given set matters less than what is still true of it: a rotation only ever removes cards from Standard, so everything below is still playable in Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Vintage and Commander.

Modern & Eternal
Sets that skipped Standard by design rather than rotating out of it. Some went straight to Modern, most were eternal-only from the start, and none of them ever had a Standard legality to lose. Two are further out than that: Unsanctioned is silver-bordered and legal in no sanctioned format at all, and Unfinity shipped a legal half where the stamp on each card decides.
Masters 25
Released Mar 16, 2018
The 25th-anniversary reprint set, with at least one card drawn from every set printed to that point.
Battlebond

The planeswalker commander year: four decks, each led by a planeswalker allowed in the command zone.

Sold as the last Masters set, with a foil box topper in every box and a card pool aimed at Modern and Legacy.

The set that started the line, printing straight into Modern. Forty-four returning mechanics and not one new keyword, with snow as the theme it is remembered for.

Four precons with no booster set, each built on a returning keyword: morph, flashback, madness and populate.
Unsanctioned
Released Feb 29, 2020
Five 30-card silver-bordered decks, shuffled two at a time. Legal in no sanctioned format, Commander included, and what rule zero actually offers instead.
Commander 2020

Five decks set on Ikoria, the first Commander year tied to an expansion rather than sitting beside one. Every deck and its commander.

Double Masters
Released Aug 7, 2020
The first double-rare Masters set, two years before Double Masters 2022. All reprints, so legality is a per-card question.

Commander 2021

Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate
Released Jun 10, 2022
A draftable Commander set on Faerun, and where Backgrounds came from. The initiative and the Undercity explained.
Double Masters 2022
Released Jul 8, 2022
Two rares in every pack and nothing but reprints, which makes the legality question per card rather than per set.
Jumpstart 2022
Released Dec 2, 2022
The second Jumpstart: 46 themes, 51 new cards, and the same two-packs-and-play format. Its new cards skip Standard, Pioneer and Modern.

Four Commander decks and no booster set, and the debut of squad and ravenous.

The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth
Released Jun 23, 2023

Assassin's Creed
Released Jul 5, 2024
A smaller Modern-legal Universes Beyond release, and the debut of freerunning. Predates the policy that made crossover sets Standard-legal.
