Archetypes
A single creature carrying the whole game plan doesn't require a $50 Sword to do it. Here are seven pieces of equipment and auras, none over a couple of dollars, that build a real Voltron threat.
Equipment is the safer half of the Voltron toolbox on a budget, since it survives a board wipe and can be moved to a new creature if your commander dies. None of these three costs more than a couple of dollars.
Bonesplitter ↗
A flat +2/+0 for one mana to cast and one to equip. It never grows and it does nothing else, but it is the cheapest way to make an early attacker relevant, and it's a card you can afford four of if you want them.
Ancestral Blade ↗
Two mana for the equipment and a free 1/1 token to carry it immediately, no separate equip cost the turn it enters. That token is also a second body to move the equipment onto later if your commander dies.
Rogue's Gloves ↗
Turns your Voltron creature's combat damage into a card every time it connects, for two mana and a two-mana equip. That card draw is what keeps a budget list from running out of gas the way a pure stat-stick can.
Auras are less resilient than equipment but often stronger per mana, and a handful of them stacked on one creature adds up fast, especially the ones that scale off how many enchantments or artifacts you control.
Ethereal Armor ↗
One mana for +1/+1 per enchantment you control and first strike. In a deck running several cheap auras this scales fast, and first strike is real protection against a chump blocker trading with your threat.
Hyena Umbra ↗
Totem armor means your creature survives the first thing that would destroy it, the aura dies instead. That's a real answer to a removal spell for one mana, which is rare at any price.
Cartouche of Strength ↗
Three mana for +1/+1, trample, and a free fight against an opposing creature when it enters, which functions as removal on the way in rather than pure stats.
All That Glitters ↗
Two mana for +1/+1 per artifact and enchantment you control. Pair it with the equipment and auras above and it's frequently a +4/+4 or bigger for the price of a common.
If you do put money into this deck down the line, protection is the highest-leverage upgrade, not more power. A Voltron creature that can't be removed is worth more than one that hits five points harder. See Best Protection Spells in Commander for where that budget is best spent.
Yes. The Swords are excellent but they aren't what makes a Voltron deck function, they're a power ceiling on top of a plan that works fine with cheap equipment. Bonesplitter, Ancestral Blade, and a handful of one- and two-mana auras get a creature to lethal commander damage just as reliably, they just take a turn or two longer to get there.
Hyena Umbra for one mana, since totem armor absorbs the first removal spell or lethal combat damage aimed at your creature and only the aura dies. It isn't as strong as hexproof, because a -X/-X effect or an exile-based removal spell still gets through, but it is the cheapest real answer available.
Lean equipment if you can only afford a few pieces, since it survives when the creature carrying it dies and can move to a new target. Auras are individually more efficient and are worth including once your budget stretches past the first handful of cards, but a deck that's entirely auras has no recovery plan after a board wipe or a well-timed removal spell.
TurnZero HQ's Deck Lab measures your protection package against real deckbuilding targets as you add cards, so you know before game night whether the deck can survive a removal spell.
