Commander Brainstorm

New commanders, before they come out. Each brainstorm takes one previewed legend with an unusual ability or more than one good direction, and works out several different decks it could lead.

What a brainstorm is

A brainstorm is the first pass at a commander, written while the card is still in preview. It is not a finished decklist. It picks the two to four directions the card supports best, and for each one names the specific cards that make it work, explains what makes that version fun or different, says how it wins, and says which bracket it is built for.

TurnZero HQ picks commanders for this series for one of two reasons: the card does something no other commander does, or it supports several different decks and the best one is not obvious. Every card text, ruling and bracket call on these pages is checked against current Oracle text and the Comprehensive Rules, and the commander's text is the previewed version until the set releases.

The brainstorms

From a brainstorm to a deck

Once you have picked a direction, the Commander deck template covers the lands, ramp, removal and card draw the rest of the deck needs, and the bracket guide explains what each bracket allows. Build the list in the Deck Lab and check it with Rate My Deck. For commanders that are already out, the Commander Guides hub has full build guides.

Brew it, then see how it plays.

TurnZero HQ logs every game, so you can tell which version of a new commander actually wins at your table.
