Commander Brainstorm

Commander Brainstorm: Kira Nerys, Firebrand

Kira turns every creature you put onto the battlefield during combat into another attacker. Here are three different decks built on that one line, with the cards, the win condition and the bracket each one is aiming for.

Kira Nerys, Firebrand ↗

Three mana (one generic, one red, one white) for a legendary 4/3 Bajoran Soldier with trample. If a creature you control would enter while you control an attacking creature, instead it enters tapped and attacking. Whenever another creature you control enters, it gets +1/+1 until end of turn. Rare, Star Trek (TRK), releasing November 13, 2026.

Kira Nerys, Firebrand is a three-mana Boros commander, and her best trick is timing. A creature that enters attacking after your opponents have declared blockers is unblocked, so every flash creature, instant-speed token spell and "put a creature onto the battlefield" effect in your deck becomes damage your opponents cannot block. The three builds below use that in different ways: flash creatures at Bracket 2, instant-speed tokens with burn payoffs at Bracket 3, and big creatures cheated in mid-combat at Bracket 3 or higher.

Why Kira is worth a brainstorm

Most Boros commanders reward you for attacking. Kira rewards you for what you do after you attack, which is a different deck. Four rules decide how she plays, and each one changes which cards are good with her.

After blockers, new attackers are unblocked. A creature put onto the battlefield attacking during the declare blockers step or later enters unblocked (Comprehensive Rules 506.3d). Your opponents block what they can see, and then you add attackers they cannot answer in combat.

You choose who each new attacker hits. In Commander every opponent is a defending player during your combat, so a creature that enters attacking can go at any of them, not only the player Kira attacked (Comprehensive Rules 508.4 and 802.2). That lets you send damage at the player with the lowest life total after you have seen everyone's blocks.

Attack triggers do not fire. A creature that enters attacking never "attacked," so abilities that say "whenever this creature attacks," exert and battle cry do nothing for it (Comprehensive Rules 508.3a). Enters abilities still trigger, which is why this page leans on cards with strong enters abilities.

She needs an attacker, and it cannot be her own re-entry. The effect only applies while you control an attacking creature, and it does not apply to Kira herself as she enters (Comprehensive Rules 614.12). Blinking Kira takes her out of combat. Casting her from the command zone mid-combat puts her in untapped. The effect is also mandatory: a mana creature you flash in during combat enters tapped and cannot tap for mana that turn.

Three builds at a glance

BuildThe planWin conditionBracket
The Ambush Flash creatures with strong enters abilities, cast after blocks Unblocked flying and trample damage, a little more each combat 2 (Core)
The Resistance Cell Instant-speed token spells and spell-triggered token makers One big X spell after blocks, with per-creature damage to every opponent 3 (Upgraded)
Orbital Drop Put huge creatures onto the battlefield from your hand mid-combat One unblocked threat whose enters ability clears the way 3, scaling to 4

Build 1: The Ambush (Bracket 2)

This is the build that plays most like Kira's card. You attack with Kira and whatever else is safe to send, let your opponents block, and then cast flash creatures that come in attacking and unblocked. A table learns quickly that an open mana pool on your turn means more attackers than they can see, and that makes every block a guess.

The fun is in the blink pieces. Say an opponent blocks your second attacker. You flash in Restoration Angel , which enters attacking and unblocked, and use its enters ability to blink the blocked creature. That creature comes back attacking and unblocked, and its own enters ability triggers again. A block your opponent made on purpose now does nothing.

Flash creatures

Flash enablers and blink

Win condition. There is no single finisher. The deck wins by dealing more damage each combat than the board suggests: Kira's 4 trample, plus 8 to 12 power of unblocked fliers she brings with her. Kira's commander damage is a slower second route, and a reliable one, because Saavik, Stoic Student and Bogardan Hellkite remove her blockers and trample sends the rest through.

Why Bracket 2. The deck needs no Game Changers, no tutors and no combos, and its threats are creatures any table can answer with ordinary removal. What it has is surprise, which is exactly the kind of power a Core table enjoys playing against. On opponents' turns, the same flash creatures enter untapped and can block, so holding mana up is never wasted.

Build 2: The Resistance Cell (Bracket 3)

Kira spent the occupation of Bajor as a resistance fighter, and this build plays like a resistance cell: the attackers your opponents see are never all of them. Instead of flash creatures, it runs instant-speed token spells and creatures that make tokens when you cast spells. Every token gets Kira's +1/+1, so a 1/1 token is a 2/2 the turn it arrives.

Token makers

Turning tokens into damage

Win condition. One X spell after blocks. With Warleader's Call on the battlefield, Secure the Wastes for X = 5 costs six mana, deals 5 damage to each opponent from the enters triggers, and adds five unblocked 3/3 attackers you can aim wherever you want. That is 30 damage across the table from one card, before Kira or anything else connects. Add Purphoros, God of the Forge or Impact Tremors and the same spell ends the game.

Why Bracket 3. Nothing here is a two-card combo, but a deck that can deal 30 or more damage from an instant out of nowhere wins faster than a Core table expects, and the bracket guidelines ask you to say so. It also has room for up to three Game Changers. Smothering Tithe fits best, since Treasure pays for X spells.

Build 3: Orbital Drop (Bracket 3, scaling to 4)

The third build skips the small creatures and uses Kira to make the classic "put a creature onto the battlefield" cards better than they have ever been in Commander. Sneak Attack and Through the Breach normally give your opponents a chance to block the creature they bring in. With Kira, you use them after blocks, and an 8-mana creature arrives attacking and unblocked for a fraction of its cost.

The cheat pieces

What to cheat in

Order your triggers. When a creature enters, Kira's +1/+1 trigger and any damage trigger ( Terror of the Peaks , Warstorm Surge ) all go on the stack together. Put Kira's on top so it resolves first, because those damage triggers check the creature's power when they resolve.

Win condition. One large creature, unblocked, with an enters ability that either removes blockers from Kira or deals damage directly. Moonshaker Cavalry joining five other creatures gives all six +6/+6 and flying, and it is the cleanest single-card finish the deck has.

Why Bracket 3, scaling to 4. Cheating in 8-mana creatures on turn five is faster than a Core deck, so this starts at Upgraded. Its three Game Changers can be Gamble (to find Sneak Attack or the threat), Jeska's Will and Ancient Tomb . Add more than three and it is a Bracket 4 deck, which is a fine place for it as long as you say so at Rule 0.

Cards that look right but are not

Boros has plenty of creatures that care about attacking, and most of them do less with Kira than they appear to. A creature that enters attacking was never declared as an attacker, so these three lose the part of their text you want. Each is still playable, but only as a creature you cast before combat.

What every build shares

Under each plan, the deck is a normal Boros Commander deck. It wants two-mana rocks like Arcane Signet , Boros Signet and Talisman of Conviction so it can hold mana open on its own turn, cheap removal like Swords to Plowshares and Chaos Warp , and a way to keep Kira alive, because she is three mana and every build loses its instant-speed tricks without an attacker on board. Boros Charm does both jobs: indestructible against a wipe, or double strike on a Kira who has already trampled past her blocker. See the Commander deck template for the baseline counts.

Weaknesses

Every build depends on having an attacker when the trick resolves, so instant-speed removal on Kira before blocks, or on your only attacker in response to a flash spell, turns your ambush into an ordinary creature that enters untapped. Attack with a second creature when you can afford to. Settle the Wreckage and similar cards that punish attacking creatures hit harder against this deck than most, since everything you add joins the attack. Fog effects stop all of it at once.

Which build should you pick?

Pick The Ambush if you like holding mana up and making opponents guess, or if your table plays at Bracket 2. Pick The Resistance Cell if you would rather win with one big turn and enjoy counting damage across the table. Pick Orbital Drop if your pod plays at Bracket 3 or 4 and you want the most explosive version of the commander. Build the list in the Deck Lab, and check its bracket with Rate My Deck before you sit down.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does Kira Nerys, Firebrand come out?

She is a rare in Magic's Star Trek set, which releases November 13, 2026, with prerelease events November 6 to 12. Everything on this page is based on her previewed card text.

Are creatures that enter attacking with Kira blocked?

Only if they enter before blockers are declared. A creature put onto the battlefield attacking during the declare blockers step or later enters unblocked (Comprehensive Rules 506.3d). That is the whole reason to hold flash creatures until after your opponents have blocked.

Which player does a creature that enters attacking attack?

You choose, as it enters. In Commander every opponent is a defending player during your combat, so you can send each new attacker at whichever opponent you want, including one Kira is not attacking (Comprehensive Rules 508.4 and 802.2).

Do attack triggers work on creatures that enter attacking?

No. A creature that enters attacking is attacking, but it was never declared as an attacker, so "whenever this creature attacks" abilities, exert and battle cry do not trigger (Comprehensive Rules 508.3a and 508.4). Enters abilities and combat damage triggers work normally.

Can I blink Kira so she comes back unblocked?

No. Her replacement effect applies to a general group of creatures, so it does not apply to Kira herself as she enters (Comprehensive Rules 614.12). Blinking her returns her untapped and out of combat. Blink one of your other blocked attackers instead.

Does Kira make my creatures enter tapped on my opponents' turns?

Only while you control an attacking creature, which in practice means during your own combat. On an opponent's turn, a creature you flash in enters untapped and can block.
