Commander 2020
Timeless Wisdom
Cycling triggers reward careful sequencing. Out of the box, before any upgrades. How we rate precons
Buy Timeless Wisdom on TCGplayer →Timeless Wisdom is a cycling deck that turns a free cycle each turn into a stream of tokens, damage and card selection, and it gets better the more turns it sees. Gavi, Nest Warden makes the first cycle of every turn cost nothing and makes a 2/2 whenever you draw your second card in a turn, so a cheap cycler on each opponent's turn becomes a small army. The box holds it back with a slow mana base full of tapped lands, a few goad auras that don't help the plan, and less cheap removal than a three-color deck should have.
TurnZero HQ rates Timeless Wisdom a 3 out of 5 on difficulty and a 3 out of 5 on power, as it comes in the box. That is our editorial read, not an official Wizards rating. The full hundred cards are on the Timeless Wisdom decklist page, and every other precon we cover is on the precon directory.
Gavi, Nest Warden has two abilities that feed each other. The first card you cycle each turn costs {0} instead of its cycling cost, and that applies on every player's turn, not only yours. Whenever you draw your second card in a turn, you create a 2/2 red and white Dinosaur Cat. On your own turn the draw step plus one free cycle makes a token, and on an opponent's turn one free cycle plus any other draw does the same.
The rest of the deck pays you for every cycle. Drake Haven makes a 2/2 flying Drake for {1} each time you cycle or discard, Lightning Rift deals 2 damage to any target for {1}, and Valiant Rescuer adds a 1/1 the first time each turn you cycle another card. Fluctuator makes most cycling costs two less, so with Gavi out the deck can cycle several cards a turn for very little mana.
Draw triggers are the other half. Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind pings for each card you draw, The Locust God makes a hasty 1/1 flier for each, and Psychosis Crawler drains each opponent. Zenith Flare is the finisher in long games, since it deals damage equal to the number of cycling cards in your graveyard.
Gavi, Nest Warden ↗
A free cycle every turn, including opponents' turns, and a 2/2 whenever you draw your second card in a turn. It turns a hand of cyclers into a steady stream of tokens.
Fluctuator ↗
Two mana and every cycling cost you pay drops by two. Most of the deck's cyclers cost one or two, so many of them become free.
Drake Haven ↗
Pay {1} whenever you cycle or discard to make a 2/2 flier. With Gavi's free cycle, each turn around the table adds Drakes to your board.
Lightning Rift ↗
Pay {1} whenever a player cycles to deal 2 damage to any target. It is removal for small creatures early and a way to finish opponents late.
The Locust God ↗
A hasty 1/1 flier for every card you draw, and it returns to your hand when it dies. Every cycle adds to the board.
Zenith Flare ↗
Deals damage to any target equal to the number of cycling cards in your graveyard and gains you that much life. In a long game it can end the game at instant speed.
The mana base is slow. Most of the cycling lands enter tapped, the three bounce lands enter tapped, and Mystic Monastery does too. On top of that, Temple of the False God , Hostile Desert and Skycloud Expanse either make colorless mana or need extra mana to use. A three-color deck that wants to hold up mana for cycling on other players' turns feels each of those.
Some cards work against the plan. Martial Impetus , Psychic Impetus and Agitator Ant goad opponents' creatures, which is a political tool that does nothing with cycling or draws. Windfall refills every opponent's hand along with yours. Cheap removal is thin too: apart from Cast Out , Savai Thundermane and the board wipes, the deck struggles to answer a single threat. See how much removal a Commander deck needs.
Each upgrade below starts from something the deck does poorly and says what a replacement card has to do. The cards named are examples, not the only answer: if you own something else that does the same job, or a newer printing does it better, it goes in the same slot. Make one change at a time and play a few games between them, so you can tell which change helped. The general method is in how to upgrade a Commander precon →
Gavi wants you to have mana open on every turn for cycling payoffs like Drake Haven and Lightning Rift . A land that enters tapped or taps only for colorless is a turn where that doesn't happen.
What to look for Two-color lands in blue, red and white that enter untapped most of the time. Keep the cycling lands, since they feed the plan, and cut the colorless or awkward ones first.
Cut, for example
Temple of the False God Taps for nothing until you control five lands, which makes it a dead land in the early turns.
Hostile Desert Taps only for colorless, and its creature ability needs land cards in your graveyard that this deck rarely puts there.
Skycloud Expanse Needs another mana to make two colored mana, so it can't produce colored mana on its own on the turn you play it.
Add, for example
Gavi's free cycle works on every turn, so the deck wants cards that are worth cycling at instant speed and are still good to cast when you need them.
What to look for Cards with cycling, ideally at instant speed, that either do something useful when cast or trigger a bonus when cycled. Cheaper cycling matters less with Gavi, but the card should never be dead.
Cut, for example
Windfall Makes every player discard and draw a new hand. It refills your opponents as much as you, and Gavi gives you card flow without that cost.
Cryptic Trilobite Its mana can only pay for activated abilities. Cycling counts, but Gavi and Fluctuator already make most cycling free.
Add, for example
Shark Typhoon ↗
Cycle it for X plus {1}{U} to draw a card and make an X/X flying Shark at instant speed. Late in the game it is a large flier whenever you want one.
Censor ↗
Two mana to counter a spell unless its controller pays {1}, or cycle it for {U}. Cheap to keep in hand, and always a free Gavi cycle.
Lórien Revealed ↗
Draws three cards when you need fuel, or islandcycles for {1} to find a land. Gavi makes the islandcycling free.
The deck answers a crowded board with wipes but has little for one problem creature or one game-winning spell. Instant-speed answers fit a deck that already keeps mana open on other players' turns.
What to look for Removal or counterspells costing three mana or less, at instant speed, that handle a single threat.
Cut, for example
Portal Mage Its only effect is redirecting one attacker when it enters during combat. It is situational and does nothing for cycling.
Agitator Ant Gives each player two +1/+1 counters every end step to goad creatures. It makes opponents' creatures bigger and has no tie to the deck's plan.
Add, for example
Swords to Plowshares ↗
One mana at instant speed to exile a creature. Its controller gains life equal to its power.
Chaos Warp ↗
Shuffles any permanent into its owner's library at instant speed, which is a rare answer to an enchantment or artifact in red.
Arcane Denial ↗
Two mana to counter any spell. Its controller draws two later and you draw one, so save it for spells that matter.
The goad auras take up slots that cycling payoffs could fill. Every card that rewards cycling makes Gavi's free cycle each turn worth more.
What to look for Cheap creatures or enchantments that trigger on each cycle or each draw and deal damage, make tokens, or draw extra cards.
Cut, for example
Martial Impetus An aura that goads an opponent's creature and pumps other attackers. It helps opponents fight each other but does nothing when you cycle.
Psychic Impetus Another goad aura. The scry 2 is minor, and it spends three mana on an opponent's creature instead of on your plan.
Add, for example
Drannith Stinger ↗
Deals 1 damage to each opponent whenever you cycle another card, and it has cycling {1} itself. With free cycles each turn the damage adds up.
Teferi's Ageless Insight ↗
Every card you draw outside your first draw each turn becomes two. Each cycle draws two, which reaches Gavi's second-card trigger and feeds every draw payoff in the deck.
The upgraded deck still wins through many small sources of damage. Cycle each turn with Gavi, Nest Warden , let Drake Haven , Gavi and The Locust God build a flying board, and use Lightning Rift , Drannith Stinger and Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind to chip opponents down. Zenith Flare or a big Shark Typhoon finishes a long game. The changes above mostly speed up the early turns and give you answers while the engine builds.
A fair choice for a player who has a few games behind them and likes decks that act on every turn, not only their own. There are many triggers to track, and holding mana up for cycling on opponents' turns takes some practice, so it is not the first deck to hand a brand-new player. Once that habit forms, it plays at a solid middle level and rewards careful sequencing.
