Odyssey, in black

What this set is

Torment is the second Odyssey block set, and it leans on one color on purpose: 41 of its 133 mono-colored cards are black, against 20 each for white and green. The story follows the Cabal, Otaria's black-aligned criminal order.

Its new mechanic is madness. A card with madness can be cast for its madness cost when you discard it, so discard outlets turn from a cost into an engine. Threshold and flashback return from Odyssey.

Commander players come to it for Cabal Coffers, which makes {B} for each Swamp you control, and for Cabal Ritual and the four Tainted lands. Chainer, Dementia Master is its most played legend.

Themes

Every mechanic in Torment

New

Madness

If you discard this card, you may cast it for its madness cost instead of putting it into your graveyard. Discarding stops being a loss when the card you discard is the one you wanted to cast.

Returning

Threshold and flashback

Both return from Odyssey: threshold turns on with seven cards in your graveyard, and flashback lets a card be cast again from there.

Where You Can Play It

Format legality

Torment is a single code, and nothing from it is banned in any eternal format.

Not Standard-legal, and not Modern-legal as a set: Modern starts at Eighth Edition (July 2003). A card from here that was reprinted in a later Modern-legal set is Modern-legal in this printing too, because legality follows the card, not the printing. None of its cards is banned or restricted in Legacy, Vintage or Commander. It is also legal in Premodern, the community format built on Fourth Edition through Scourge. Commons from any set are Pauper-legal; that isn't listed per set here.

Commanders

FAQ

Common questions

Where can I play Torment cards?

In Legacy, Vintage and Commander, minus the cards each format bans. Torment is too old for Standard, Pioneer or Modern as a set, though any card that was later reprinted in a Modern-legal set is Modern-legal in every printing. It is also legal in Premodern, a community format built on Fourth Edition through Scourge.

Did madness start in Torment?

Yes. Torment introduced madness on 10 cards. Shadows over Innistrad brought it back in 2016.

Is Cabal Coffers from Torment?

Yes, and it is legal in Legacy, Vintage and Commander.

Playing Torment in Commander?

TurnZero HQ keeps deck records, MMR, and moments for every Commander night, so you can see which new cards are actually earning their slot.
