Quick verdict

Maestros Massacre turns creatures into extra copies of spells. Anhelo, the Painter gives your first instant or sorcery each turn casualty 2, so sacrificing a creature with 2 or more power copies it, and the deck adds Double Vision and Twinning Staff to copy it again. The ceiling is high, but the deck plays too many seven-plus mana sorceries, a sweeper that kills its own fodder, and a mana base full of tapped lands, which makes the early turns slow.

TurnZero HQ rates Maestros Massacre a 4 out of 5 on difficulty and a 3 out of 5 on power, as it comes in the box. That is our editorial read, not an official Wizards rating. The full hundred cards are on the Maestros Massacre decklist page, and every other precon we cover is on the precon directory.

How the precon plays

Anhelo, the Painter is a three-mana 1/3 with deathtouch. The first instant or sorcery you cast each turn has casualty 2: as you cast it, you may sacrifice a creature with power 2 or greater, and when you do, you copy the spell and may choose new targets for the copy. Because the ability works on every turn, not only yours, an instant cast on an opponent's turn gets copied too.

The deck supplies its own fodder. Bloodsoaked Champion and Squee, the Immortal come back from the graveyard, Rekindling Phoenix returns at your next upkeep, and Woe Strider can escape. Each one is a creature you can sacrifice to Anhelo more than once.

The spells are where the damage happens. A copied Maestros Charm deals 5 damage twice, a copied Bedevil destroys two permanents, and Twinning Staff adds one more copy to every copy effect. Kess, Dissident Mage lets you recast an instant or sorcery from your graveyard once each turn, which gives Anhelo a second target list from the same cards.

What works out of the box

What needs improvement

The top end is heavy. Clone Legion costs nine mana, Army of the Damned eight and Call the Skybreaker seven, and none of them uses Anhelo better than a cheap removal spell does. Chain Reaction deals damage to every creature, which kills the 2-power fodder the commander needs and often Anhelo too.

Seven of the deck's lands always enter tapped: three Thriving lands, Crumbling Necropolis , Temple of Epiphany , Path of Ancestry and Myriad Landscape . A spells deck wants to hold up instant-speed mana on opponents' turns, and tapped lands make that harder.

Upgrade ideas

Each upgrade below starts from something the deck does poorly and says what a replacement card has to do. The cards named are examples, not the only answer: if you own something else that does the same job, or a newer printing does it better, it goes in the same slot. Make one change at a time and play a few games between them, so you can tell which change helped. The general method is in how to upgrade a Commander precon →

1. Fix the tapped lands

Anhelo is at its best when you can cast an instant on any turn. Lands that enter tapped cost you that window in the early game.

What to look for Dual lands in two of your colors that usually enter untapped, such as check lands that look for a basic land type you already control.

Cut, for example

✕

Thriving Bluff Always enters tapped. The fixing is real, but untapped duals do the same job without slowing you down.

✕

Thriving Isle Another land that always enters tapped in a deck that wants mana open on opponents' turns.

✕

Thriving Moor The same problem as the other Thriving lands.

2. Trade expensive sorceries for fodder that comes back

Every turn you can't sacrifice a 2-power creature is a turn Anhelo does nothing. Recursive creatures keep the copies going and cost far less than the deck's biggest spells.

What to look for Cheap creatures with at least 2 power that can return from the graveyard on their own, so one card covers several casualty payments.

Cut, for example

✕

Clone Legion Nine mana to copy another player's creatures. It is rarely castable in time to matter.

✕

Call the Skybreaker Seven mana for one 5/5 flier. Retrace keeps it coming back, but the deck has better ways to spend that much mana.

3. Cheap removal worth copying

Anhelo's copy is best on a cheap, targeted removal spell: two mana kills two creatures. The deck's six-mana sorceries and symmetrical sweepers get far less from the same copy.

What to look for Instant-speed removal costing two mana or less that hits a creature or a wider range of permanents. Each one becomes a two-for-one with Anhelo.

Cut, for example

✕

Reign of the Pit Six mana, and every player including you sacrifices a creature. The Demon it makes is rarely worth what you lose.

✕

Chain Reaction Deals damage to every creature, which kills your casualty fodder and usually Anhelo along with it.

4. Protect the combo turn with counterspells

The deck has Mystic Confluence and little else to stop an opponent's spell. Cheap counters protect a big copied turn and stop the wipes and combos you can't race.

What to look for Counterspells costing two mana or less, so you can hold one up and still cast your own spell in the same turn.

Cut, for example

✕

Determined Iteration Copies a creature token each combat, but the deck makes few tokens worth copying.

✕

Smuggler's Buggy A vehicle that needs crew 2 and a combat hit before it casts its hidden card. It is slow in a deck that wants to sacrifice creatures, not tap them.

Win conditions

The deck wins by turning each copied spell into a large swing. Copied removal clears the way for Rekindling Phoenix and Syrix, Carrier of the Flame to attack, a copied Maestros Charm drains each opponent for 3 twice, and Army of the Damned makes thirteen Zombies per copy if you reach eight mana. The changes above make the copies cheaper and more frequent, which matters more than the size of any single spell.

Who should buy this precon

Best for an experienced player who enjoys planning a turn around one spell. Anhelo only copies the first instant or sorcery each turn, so you have to choose which spell to lead with, which creature to sacrifice, and whether to save it for an opponent's turn. The deck is a demanding play and sits at about average precon power before the upgrades.
