Previews of mechanics to come
Future Sight closes the Time Spiral block by looking forward. Part of the set is futureshifted, printed in a distinct frame and built on mechanics or ideas that did not exist yet, several of which later sets turned into full mechanics.
Deathtouch and lifelink were printed as keywords for the first time here, on Thornweald Archer and Mistmeadow Skulk, and both became evergreen. Delve, which exiles cards from your graveyard to help pay for a spell, made its debut too and returned in Khans of Tarkir.
Commander players use Pact of Negation, Cloud Key, Akroma's Memorial, Aven Mindcensor and Dryad Arbor, a land that is also a creature. Its legends include Venser, Shaper Savant, Jhoira of the Ghitu and the five-color Sliver Legion. Modern bans Bridge from Below.
Themes
Futureshifted cards
Cards printed in a special frame that previewed what Magic might do later. Some of their one-off mechanics became real ones in later sets.
Deathtouch and lifelink
Both appear as keywords for the first time on one card each. Deathtouch makes any damage lethal; lifelink gains you that much life. Both are now evergreen.
Delve
Each card you exile from your graveyard while casting the spell pays for {1}. Three Future Sight cards have it.
Where You Can Play It
Future Sight is a single code with one Modern ban.
Not Standard-legal, and never Pioneer-legal: Pioneer starts at Return to Ravnica (October 2012). Everything here is legal in Modern, Legacy, Vintage and Commander unless a ban list says otherwise. Modern bans Bridge from Below, and Pauper bans Narcomoeba. Nothing is banned in Legacy, Vintage or Commander. Commons from any set are Pauper-legal; that isn't listed per set here.
Commanders
The legends this set is best known for. Tap one for its printings and what it costs.
