Magic as it might have been
What this set is
Planar Chaos is the middle set of the Time Spiral block, where Time Spiral looked at Magic's past and Future Sight at its future. Its theme is an alternate present: a part of the set reimagines familiar cards as if they had belonged to a different color, so a classic effect turns up in a color that never had it.
Damnation, a black version of Wrath of God, is the best-known example, and Pongify gives blue a one-mana creature removal spell that leaves a 3/3 Ape behind. Vanishing, a counter-based lifespan for permanents, appears on 10 cards.
For Commander it supplies Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, Harmonize, Imp's Mischief and legends such as Radha, Heir to Keld, Braids, Conjurer Adept and Teneb, the Harvester. Modern bans Simian Spirit Guide.
Where You Can Play It
Format legality
Planar Chaos is a single code with one Modern ban.
Not Standard-legal, and never Pioneer-legal: Pioneer starts at Return to Ravnica (October 2012). Everything here is legal in Modern, Legacy, Vintage and Commander unless a ban list says otherwise. Modern bans Simian Spirit Guide. Nothing is banned in Legacy, Vintage or Commander. Commons from any set are Pauper-legal; that isn't listed per set here.
