The first core set with legends

What this set is

Tenth Edition is the tenth core set and the last of the numbered editions; Magic 2010 followed it two years later. It has 383 numbered cards (141 common, 121 uncommon, 121 rare), and the catalog lists premium foils of many of them.

It is the first core set with legendary creatures: Arcanis the Omnipotent, Reya Dawnbringer, Squee, Goblin Nabob, Phage the Untouchable and Ascendant Evincar among them, all reprinted from earlier sets. Compared with Ninth Edition, 214 of its cards are new to the core set.

For Commander it is a good source of staples: Rampant Growth, Terramorphic Expanse, Mind Stone, Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves and the enemy painlands. Nothing in it is banned in Modern, Legacy, Vintage or Commander.

Where You Can Play It

Format legality

Tenth Edition is a single code with nothing banned in any of its formats.

Not Standard-legal, and never Pioneer-legal: Pioneer starts at Return to Ravnica (October 2012). Everything here is legal in Modern, Legacy, Vintage and Commander unless a ban list says otherwise. None of its cards is banned or restricted in any of those formats. Commons from any set are Pauper-legal; that isn't listed per set here.

In Modern, Legacy, Vintage and Commander, minus the cards each format bans. Tenth Edition left Standard long ago and was never in Pioneer, which starts in 2012.

Was Tenth Edition the first core set with legendary creatures?

Yes. It reprinted 15 legendary creatures, including Arcanis the Omnipotent and Squee, Goblin Nabob. No earlier core set had any.

What came after Tenth Edition?

Magic 2010, in 2009, which replaced numbered editions with year-named core sets.

Playing Tenth Edition in Commander?

TurnZero HQ keeps deck records, MMR, and moments for every Commander night, so you can see which new cards are actually earning their slot.
