The ship and the saga

What this set is

Weatherlight is the third set of the Mirage block, but its story looks forward rather than back. It introduced the skyship Weatherlight, Gerrard and his crew, whose story ran through the next several years of sets and is known as the Weatherlight Saga.

It is a small set of 167 cards with no new keywords. Mind Stone, a two-mana rock that cashes in for a card, is the card most Commander players have used, and it is one of the most played artifacts in the format. Buried Alive puts three creatures into your graveyard, Gemstone Mine taps for any color three times, and Doomsday sets up the top of your library for a combo finish.

Its three legendary creatures are Maraxus of Keld, Gallowbraid and Morinfen. 39 of its cards are on the Reserved List.

Where You Can Play It

Format legality

Weatherlight is a single code, and nothing from it is on any eternal ban list.

Not Standard-legal, and not Modern-legal as a set: Modern starts at Eighth Edition (July 2003). A card from here that was reprinted in a later Modern-legal set is Modern-legal in this printing too, because legality follows the card, not the printing. None of its cards is banned or restricted in Legacy, Vintage or Commander. It is also legal in Premodern, the community format built on Fourth Edition through Scourge. Commons from any set are Pauper-legal; that isn't listed per set here.

FAQ

Common questions

Where can I play Weatherlight cards?

In Legacy, Vintage and Commander, minus the cards each format bans. Weatherlight is too old for Standard, Pioneer or Modern as a set, though any card that was later reprinted in a Modern-legal set is Modern-legal in every printing. It is also legal in Premodern, a community format built on Fourth Edition through Scourge.

Is Mind Stone from Weatherlight?

Yes. It was first printed in Weatherlight and has been reprinted many times since, which is why it is Modern-legal.

What is the Weatherlight Saga?

The storyline that follows the skyship Weatherlight and its crew, led by Gerrard, through the sets that followed, up to Apocalypse in 2001.

Playing Weatherlight in Commander?

TurnZero HQ keeps deck records, MMR, and moments for every Commander night, so you can see which new cards are actually earning their slot.
