Deckbuilding
A mana rock is any artifact that taps for mana, and almost all of the value sits in the two-mana ones — Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, and the Signet and Talisman cycles. A three-mana rock only earns its slot when it makes two mana, fixes any color, or turns into a card later. How many you run comes down to your deck's average mana value, not a fixed number — and if you're in green, land ramp should be the backbone before any of them, because lands don't die to artifact removal.
A mana rock is any artifact whose job is to produce mana. That's it — it's player slang, not an official term.
Like "landfall," "mana rock" has no meaning in the Comprehensive Rules. It's shorthand players use for the category, and the boundaries are fuzzy at the edges: nobody argues about Sol Ring, but whether a creature that taps for mana counts is purely a matter of habit (most people call those "mana dorks" instead). What matters for deckbuilding isn't the label, it's the three things any given rock actually does — how much it costs, how much mana it makes, and which colors that mana can be.
One genuine rules note: tapping a rock for mana is a mana ability, and mana abilities don't use the stack. Nobody can respond to you tapping a Signet the way they could respond to a spell — it just happens. Rocks are one of three ways to accelerate, and they're not automatically the best one. The tradeoffs:
The fragility problem is real, and it's the strongest argument against rocks. A land that's on the battlefield is, for practical purposes, permanent. Mass land destruction exists but is rare and socially unpopular, so most Commander games contain exactly zero of it. Mass artifact destruction is the opposite: Vandalblast, Bane of Progress, Austere Command, Farewell, and Cyclonic Rift are all commonly played, and a single one of them can undo your entire mana base in one resolution. There's a worse version, too — Null Rod, Collector Ouphe, and Stony Silence don't destroy your rocks at all, they just switch them off, which means artifact recursion can't save you either.

One mana to destroy an artifact, or overload it for {4}{R} to destroy every artifact you don't control. Utterly one-sided against a table of rock-heavy decks, which is exactly why it's played.
Bane of Progress ↗
Destroys all artifacts and enchantments and grows for each one. A green deck ramping on lands and creatures can run this with almost no downside — the asymmetry is the whole appeal.
Null Rod ↗
Activated abilities of artifacts can't be activated. Your rocks aren't destroyed, they're just blank — and no amount of artifact recursion helps.

The same effect on a green creature body. Between these two and Stony Silence, a rock-based mana base has a failure mode that a land-based one simply doesn't.
Note the asymmetry in how those cards get played. A deck that ramps on lands and creatures can run Bane of Progress or an overloaded Vandalblast as a nearly one-sided sweeper — it blows up three opponents' mana and none of its own. A deck with eight rocks can't, and is on the receiving end of it. Ramping on artifacts doesn't just make you vulnerable; it takes some of the best cards in the format off your list.
So why is anyone playing rocks at all? Because land ramp is almost entirely a green privilege, and rocks are the only version of this effect available to everyone else. Green has an embarrassment of options across three card types — instants and sorceries like Nature's Lore, Three Visits, Farseek, Cultivate, Kodama's Reach, and Skyshroud Claim; creatures like Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves, and Farhaven Elf; even enchantments like Wild Growth. A mono-blue or Rakdos deck has essentially none of that. For those decks, artifacts aren't the resilient choice or the fragile choice — they're the only choice, which is most of why rocks appear in every Commander deck ever built.
Rocks do keep two genuine advantages even in green. They're faster: a two-mana rock is online the turn after you cast it, while Cultivate costs three and hands you a tapped land. And Sol Ring is simply better than every land-ramp spell ever printed on pure rate — one mana for two is a number no green card matches. The honest conclusion is narrower than "lands beat rocks," and it's this: if you're green, land ramp should be the backbone and rocks the supplement, not the other way around. If you're not green, run the rocks and accept the risk, because the alternative is not ramping.
A two-mana rock and a three-mana rock that both add one mana buy you exactly the same thing: one turn of acceleration. The two-drop just buys it earlier, and on a cheaper turn.
This is the part that's worth doing the arithmetic on once, because it settles the question permanently. Assume you hit every land drop and the rock adds one mana:
Read the last column. The two-mana rock moves a four-drop from turn four to turn three. The three-mana rock moves a five-drop from turn five to turn four. Both gained exactly one turn. But the three-drop version spent your entire third turn to get it, and turn three is a turn where most decks have something real they'd rather be doing. Turn two usually isn't — most Commander decks are thin on meaningful two-mana plays, which is exactly why the two-mana rock slot is so valuable. You're converting a turn you were going to waste anyway into permanent acceleration.
There's a second, larger effect: a rock's value decays with the turn you draw it. A Signet on turn two is excellent. The same Signet drawn on turn eleven is close to a blank card — you're not ramping into anything you couldn't already cast. Cheap rocks front-load their value, which is fine, because that's when acceleration is worth the most. Expensive rocks that only add one mana get the worst of both: too slow to accelerate you meaningfully, and still dead late.
A three-mana rock has to do something a two-mana rock can't. Make two mana, fix any color, or turn into a card later — otherwise it's a worse version of a cheaper card.

That's the whole test, and it's why the three-drops worth playing are a short and specific list. Worn Powerstone makes two. Chromatic Lantern fixes everything. Commander's Sphere draws a card when it's done. Sky Diamond and Star Compass — three mana, one colored mana, no upside — are the cards this test is designed to catch.
You're playing a five-color deck. Your hand has three spells you can't cast because you're short a color, and four lands on the battlefield.
A two-mana Signet fixes two specific colors. It might not be the two you're missing, and next turn you may be missing a different pair.
Chromatic Lantern costs one more and turns every land you control into a source of every color. You go from stranded to casting everything in hand.
The extra mana wasn't the point — the fixing was. That's a rock earning a three-mana slot honestly.
More mana rocks means you can run fewer lands, so a deck with ten rocks can drop to 32 lands.
Rocks need lands to cast. Cut too far and you draw hands full of acceleration you can't deploy — the worst possible failure, because a rock you can't cast is strictly worse than the land you replaced it with. A strong ramp package might take you from 37 lands to 36. It does not take you to 32.
Color count decides whether you're buying speed or buying fixing. Those want different cards.
This is the axis people most often get wrong, because the best rock in a mono-red deck and the best rock in a five-color deck have almost nothing in common. As your color count climbs the fixing ladder →, rocks stop being acceleration and start being mana base.

One mana, taps for two. It pays for itself the moment it's online and stays good on turn twelve. The single most-played card in Commander, and the only rock that's an auto-include in literally any deck.

Two mana, taps for any color in your commander's color identity. No activation cost, no drawback, perfect fixing. The default second rock in almost every multicolor deck.
Fellwar Stone ↗
Two mana, taps for any color an opponent's land could produce. At a four-player table that's usually most of the colors you want — but it's reading opponents' lands, not yours, so it's not guaranteed fixing.

Before anything else on this page, check whether you're green — because it changes the answer more than your color count does. Green's ramp package is deeper than every other color's combined, and it produces lands, which are effectively immune to the removal that kills rocks. A functional reprint of Nature's Lore, which means a green deck gets to run two copies of the effect. Both untapped, both fetching duals.
Cultivate ↗
Three mana, one land to the battlefield tapped and one to your hand. Slower than a rock, but it ramps, fixes, and replaces itself — the card advantage is why it stays good all game.
Farseek ↗
Two mana, fetches a Plains, Island, Swamp, or Mountain — notably not a Forest, but it can grab non-Forest duals. The workhorse fixer for green decks splashing other colors.
Compare Nature's Lore to a Signet directly: both cost two, both leave you one mana ahead. But the Signet dies to any of a dozen commonly played cards and gets switched off by Null Rod, while the land does not. At identical rates, take the land. The reason to still run Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, and a couple of others alongside them is speed and density — you want more than four or five ramp pieces, and green's best spells cost two to four mana while the best rocks cost one to two.
This also frees up a slot most decks can't use. A green deck with only two or three rocks can happily run Bane of Progress or an overloaded Vandalblast and point it at the table, which is one of the strongest asymmetric effects available in the format.
A mono-color deck has no fixing problem to solve — its lands already make the only color it needs. That frees it to run rocks purely on mana produced, including colorless-only ones that would be a liability elsewhere. This is the one archetype where Worn Powerstone, Thran Dynamo, and Hedron Archive are straightforwardly good rather than situational, and where you should skip the Signets and Talismans entirely — you're not fixing anything.
Two-color decks get the best-designed rocks in the game, because both cycles have a card for every pair. Run Arcane Signet, then your pair's Signet and Talisman, and you have three two-mana rocks that all fix correctly. Most decks want both cycles rather than picking a side.
Azorius Signet ↗
One of ten Signets, one per color pair. Pay {1} and tap it for two colored mana — a net gain of one, and it filters awkward mana into exactly the two colors you need. Best when you have spare generic mana or double-colored costs to pay.
Talisman of Progress ↗
One of the Talisman cycle, again one per pair. Taps for colorless for free, or for either of its colors at the cost of 1 damage to you. Needs no mana to activate, which makes it the better turn-two play when every mana is already spoken for.
Signet or Talisman? A Signet converts one generic mana into two colored — a net gain of one, plus real filtering, so it shines when you have colorless-producing lands or double-colored costs like {U}{U} to pay. A Talisman needs no input at all: it taps for colorless free, or for one of its two colors at the cost of 1 damage. That makes it the better play on a turn where every mana is already committed, and in decks where you'd rather not route mana through an activation cost. Neither is a mistake.
Past two colors the calculation inverts. An extra colorless mana doesn't help if the problem is that you're holding a red spell with no red source. Prioritize rocks that make any color — Arcane Signet first, then these — and be genuinely reluctant about colorless-only rocks, which get worse with every color you add.

Three mana, taps for any color — and every land you control also taps for any color. In four- and five-color decks it's not really a rock, it's a fixing engine, and it's the clearest case of a three-drop rock being worth the slot.

Three mana, taps for any color, and can instead store a charge counter to pay out extra mana on your next main phase. Fixing plus a slow ramp option in one card.
Commander's Sphere ↗
Three mana, taps for any color in your identity, and sacrifices to draw a card. Slower than Arcane Signet, but the card draw means a late-game copy is never a blank.
Fellwar Stone deserves a specific warning here. It taps for colors an opponent's lands could produce, which at a four-player table is usually generous — but it's the one rock whose reliability depends on the pod, and it can be blank against a mono-colored opponent whose colors you don't share. Treat it as very good fixing that occasionally isn't fixing at all.
Separate from color count: if your payoffs live above six mana, the two-drops stop being enough, and rocks that add two or three mana start beating them outright. These are only correct in decks that genuinely have somewhere to go — see What Makes a Curve → for whether yours does.
Worn Powerstone ↗
Three mana for two mana a turn — the exception that proves three-drops can work. It enters tapped, so you don't get the mana until your next turn, but a rock that makes two is a genuinely different card from one that makes one.
Thran Dynamo ↗
Four mana, taps for three. Only makes sense in decks with real payoffs above six mana, but in those decks it's better than any two-drop.
Gilded Lotus ↗
Five mana, taps for three of any one color. Expensive, but the colored output matters in decks casting heavy single-color spells.
Hedron Archive ↗
Four mana, taps for two, and cashes in for two cards when the ramp stops mattering. The best big rock for decks that are worried about flooding out on mana.
These trade long-game reliability for an explosive early turn. They're staples at higher power levels and a real risk in slower, grindier games where the drawback outlives the benefit.

One mana, taps for three, but doesn't untap normally and pings you each upkeep while tapped. An enormous turn-one or turn-two burst that turns into a liability if the game goes long.

Two mana, taps for three, doesn't untap on its own. No recurring damage, but it needs {4} to untap — so it's one big turn rather than steady acceleration.
Mana rocks are close to mandatory in Commander and mostly a niche choice everywhere else. The reason is life totals and clock speed.
In a 60-card format at 20 life, spending turn two on a rock means spending turn two doing nothing while an opponent attacks you. Against a fast deck that's how you lose. In Commander you start at 40 life across a multiplayer table, the games run long, and nobody can kill you on turn four — so the turn you spend accelerating is nearly free, and it compounds for the twenty turns that follow.
Commander / EDH. Rocks are format-defining. Four separate features of the format push the same direction: games last long enough for acceleration to pay off many times over, commanders cost three to six mana and you want yours out early, singleton means you can't run four copies of the best rock so you run eight different good ones instead, and a 100-card deck dilutes your draws enough that consistent early mana is worth more than it looks. Sol Ring is in essentially every deck.
cEDH. Same format, taken to its conclusion — the fast-mana package is the deck. Worth knowing that this suite got meaningfully weaker in September 2024, when Mana Crypt and Jeweled Lotus were both banned in Commander alongside Dockside Extortionist and Nadu. Legacy and Vintage. Fast artifact mana is so strong in 60-card formats that it largely isn't allowed. Sol Ring is banned outright in Legacy and restricted to one copy in Vintage — which is the clearest possible statement about what one mana for two is worth when the games are short. The original Moxen define Vintage for the same reason.
Modern. Rocks are archetype-specific rather than universal. The Talisman cycle is a genuine staple in three-plus-color midrange and control decks that need both fixing and a mana advantage. Big colorless rocks show up in dedicated big-mana shells. And Mox Opal was banned back in January 2020 for enabling artifact combo decks — again, the pattern that free mana plus a fast format equals a ban.
Standard and Pioneer. Rocks appear only when a set happens to print a good one alongside a payoff worth ramping into, and the format's clock speed usually punishes a do-nothing turn two. Treat any specific recommendation here as expiring — check current legality and what's actually being played before building around one.
Pauper and Limited. In both, rocks are about fixing rather than speed. Pauper is commons-only, so the ceiling is cards like Prophetic Prism — you're paying two mana to cast your off-color spells, not to go bigger. In Limited, a two-mana rock is often maindeckable purely because it lets you splash a third color you couldn't otherwise support.
Four questions, in this order. Most rocks fail on the first two.
Should this mana rock make your deck?
1. What does it cost?
2. Does it make the colors you actually need?
3. What is it worth when you draw it on turn eleven?
4. What's your deck's average mana value?
One thing the framework can't tell you: whether it worked. The counts above are starting points drawn from how the format generally behaves, not a law — a deck with a five-mana commander and heavy colored requirements wants a different package than the numbers suggest. The way to actually settle it is to change one thing, play ten games, and look at whether the deck got better.
Turn 1: land, cast Sol Ring. You have two colorless mana available immediately.
Turn 2: second land plus Sol Ring gives you four mana. Cast a two-mana rock and still have two mana left over.
Turn 3: three lands, Sol Ring, and the rock add up to six mana — enough for a five-mana commander with one to spare, two full turns ahead of schedule.
That's the whole case for cheap rocks. Nothing in this sequence cost you a card you wanted to cast; you just stopped wasting your first two turns.
Adding rocks without checking what you're ramping into. Acceleration is only worth something if there's a reason to have mana early. A deck whose most expensive card costs four gains very little from a ramp package built for six.
Cutting lands to make room. The most common version of this mistake, and the most punishing — rocks need lands to cast, so trading lands for rocks makes hands that do nothing at all.
Filling the three-mana slot with one-mana rocks. Sky Diamond, Star Compass, and friends look like reasonable cards and are the single most common way a deck's ramp package quietly gets worse.
Running colorless-only rocks in a four-color deck. Extra generic mana doesn't fix the actual problem, which is that you're holding a spell you can't cast.
Playing a green deck like it isn't green. Green decks that fill all ten ramp slots with artifacts are giving up the most resilient ramp in the game for no reason, and putting their whole mana base inside one Vandalblast.
Putting every ramp piece in the same card type. Even outside green, a mana base that's eight rocks and nothing else has a single point of failure. Splitting a couple of slots into land ramp or creatures means one sweeper doesn't end your game.
Reasoning from Sol Ring. It's the most-played card in the format and it's wildly unrepresentative — one mana for two, with no drawback, is a power level no other rock approaches. Judging other rocks by how much they feel like Sol Ring will lead you astray every time.
It depends on your average mana value, not a fixed number. Under 3.0, six to eight total ramp pieces is plenty. Between 3.0 and 3.5, aim for eight to ten. Above 3.5, or if your commander costs five or more, ten to twelve — and weight them heavily toward two-mana rocks rather than three-mana ones.
Yes, but only when it does something a two-drop can't. Three mana is worth it if the rock produces two or more mana (Worn Powerstone), fixes any color (Chromatic Lantern), or converts into a card later (Commander's Sphere). A three-mana rock that only adds one colorless mana is almost always a worse card than a two-mana rock that does the same thing.
They're close enough that most two-color decks run both. A Signet needs one generic mana to activate and gives you two colored mana back, so it's better when you have spare mana or double-colored costs to pay. A Talisman needs nothing to activate and taps for colorless for free, or a color for 1 damage — better on turns when every mana is already committed. Signets filter, Talismans stand alone.

But land ramp is almost entirely a green option, so non-green decks don't get the choice. The practical rule: if you're green, make land ramp the backbone and rocks the supplement. If you're not green, run rocks and accept the risk.
Green, by a very wide margin — more than every other color combined. It ramps with instants and sorceries (Nature's Lore, Three Visits, Farseek, Cultivate, Kodama's Reach, Skyshroud Claim), with creatures (Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves, Farhaven Elf), and with enchantments (Wild Growth). Sol Ring is legal in Commander, banned in Legacy, and restricted to a single copy in Vintage — a good indication of how strong one mana for two really is. It has never been printed in a Modern-legal set, so it's not part of Modern or Standard. In Commander it's legal and near-universal.
