Zhalfir has existed in Magic's lore since the 1990s as a kingdom on Dominaria: phased out of reality, phased back, and always seen from the outside. This is the first time it gets explored as a plane in its own right, with a full set built around it.
The world is split in two: a realm of endless day lit by five suns, and a spirit realm of eternal darkness where ancestors and spirits reside. Wizards has been explicit that this is an Afrofantasy set drawing on the history, mythology, and cultures of the Black diaspora, built by a predominantly Black design team working with outside consultants, professors, and authors.

Why Teferi matters here
Teferi Akosa is Zhalfiri, and he is the reason the plane has any presence in modern Magic at all. He is the one who phased it out to save it. Wizards framed his return as introducing Magic's master of chronomancy to a new generation, which is a strong hint that the set's story runs through him rather than past him.

What hasn't been announced
This set was announced roughly a year out, so most of the interesting questions are still open.
Here's the honest state of things as of July 2026.
That includes format legality. As an in-universe premier set it will be Standard-legal on
release, and Wizards' Aligning the Universes policy means every set is legal in every format it
qualifies for, but no set codes have been assigned and no release notes exist yet, so there is
nothing formally confirmed to publish. Our

The full set name
Wizards announced it simply as "Zhalfir." Recent in-universe sets have carried a subtitle, so the final name may still change.
Mechanics
No keywords named. The day/spirit-realm split is an obvious hook for a two-sided or transforming mechanic, but nothing has been confirmed.
Set code and card count
No three-letter code assigned yet, so nothing is on Scryfall and nothing is trackable by set.
Commander products
Commander decks are confirmed for all three 2027 in-universe sets, but counts, themes, and face commanders are unannounced.

Is Zhalfir part of Dominaria?
