Rulings: Settle Rules Questions Mid-Game

Every Commander table hits a weird interaction sooner or later — a triggered ability, a static effect, a stack of replacement effects nobody's sure resolves in what order. Check Ruling answers it on the spot, with sources, instead of a five-minute forum-search detour.

The problem it solves

Commander is full of edge-case interactions — a triggered ability that fires even when its controller can't normally act, a replacement effect that changes what a card actually does, a static ability that quietly overrides the printed text. Somebody's usually "pretty sure" how it works. Pretty sure isn't the same as right, and stopping to dig through a rules forum mid-game kills the table's momentum.

How it works

1

Mid-game, tap Check Ruling from the Rulings panel — no need to pause and dig through a rules app or a forum thread.

2

Type the question in plain language, the way you'd actually ask it at the table.

3

Optionally tag the specific cards the question is about, so the ruling stays attached to the right interaction.

4

Optionally attach a photo of the board if the situation is easier to show than describe.

5

Submit, and TurnZero returns a judge-style answer: a clear Outcome, an Explanation of why, and Cited Sources — comprehensive rules sections, oracle text, and official rulings, not a guess.

Why cited sources matter

An answer without a source is just another opinion at the table. Check Ruling backs its Outcome with an Explanation and Cited Sources — the specific comprehensive rules section, the card's oracle text, and any official ruling that applies — so the table isn't taking TurnZero's word for it. You can see exactly why the answer is what it is, the same way an actual judge ruling would show its work.

Past Rulings

Every ruling checked that game is saved to Past Rulings, tagged with the cards it covers. If the same interaction comes up again later in the game — or the next time that card hits the table — it's already there, cited and ready, instead of getting re-litigated from scratch. A quick thumbs up/down on each ruling helps flag anything worth a second look.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Check Ruling replace an actual judge?

For a casual Commander table, yes — it's built to settle the interaction and get the game moving, citing comprehensive rules sections and oracle text so the answer isn't just an opinion. For sanctioned tournament play, defer to an actual judge.

Do rulings get saved for later?

Yes. Every ruling you check that game is saved under Past Rulings, tagged with the cards it's about, so if the same interaction comes up again — this game or a future one — you're not re-asking the same question from scratch.

Can I tag which cards a ruling is about?

Yes, optionally. Search and tag the specific cards involved (and attach a photo if it helps) so the ruling is easy to find again and stays attached to the right interaction rather than a generic FAQ answer.

Stop arguing the same interaction twice.
