The second helping
Jumpstart 2022 is the follow-up to 2020's Jumpstart and works identically: each pack is twenty cards on one theme with its own lands, and a deck is two packs shuffled together. No deckbuilding, no sideboard, nothing to cut.
Forty-six themes again, and fifty-one new cards, which is what separates this from a reprint compilation. Several themes come in more than one version, so two packs of the same name are not necessarily the same twenty cards.
The legality is the same as the first one and catches people out for the same reason: the new cards skip Standard, Pioneer and Modern entirely and are legal in the eternal formats. That is a deliberate choice rather than an oversight, and it is how Commander products have always been printed.
Where You Can Play It
Jumpstart 2022's new cards skipped the rotating formats, exactly as the 2020 set's did. The reprints are a separate question: a reprint doesn't change legality, so each is legal wherever that card already was.
Standard was never in play for this set, so no rotation has ever touched it. Nothing here leaves Modern, Legacy, Vintage or Commander either. Commons from any set are Pauper-legal; that isn't listed per set here.
Limited
There is no draft, so there are no draft archetypes. What there is instead is a short set of rules the product follows so that any two packs make a deck, and they are worth knowing before you open one.
Two packs, forty cards
The whole deckbuilding step
Shuffle two twenty-card packs together and play. Nothing is added and nothing is cut, which is what keeps the gap between opening and playing down to about a minute.
The lands come with the theme
Why it works
Each pack carries its own lands, so any two combine into a mana base that supports both halves. It is the one design decision everything else rests on.
Fifty-one new cards
What separates it from a reprint set
Enough new cards to make it worth opening for a Commander player rather than only for a new one, and the reason this sits here rather than with the remasters.
FAQ
Each pack is twenty cards on one theme with its own lands included. Shuffle two packs together and that is your deck: nothing added, nothing cut, no sideboard. It works exactly like the 2020 Jumpstart.
No. The fifty-one cards that debuted in Jumpstart 2022 are legal in Commander, Legacy and Vintage but not in Standard, Pioneer or Modern. The reprints are a separate question: a reprint does not change legality, so each is legal wherever that card already was.
They are separate products two years apart with separate card pools and separate set codes (JMP and J22). The format is identical. Jumpstart 2022 has fifty-one new cards to the original's thirty-seven, and a different set of forty-six themes.
Forty-six, and several exist in more than one version, so two packs with the same name are not necessarily the same twenty cards.
The new cards are the reason to, since they are eternal-legal and several are built for multiplayer. If you only want a fast game with someone new to Magic, either Jumpstart product does that job equally well.
