The first Masters set
Modern Masters is the first Masters set: a booster product made entirely of reprints, sold as a premium draft experience and as a way to put Modern staples back into circulation. Every card in it was already Modern-legal from an earlier printing.
The card file reaches back across the Modern era, from Mirrodin's Sword of Fire and Ice to Shards of Alara's Progenitus, and its mechanics are those of the original cards: suspend, evoke, persist, dredge, storm and more. Sword of Fire and Ice, Doubling Season, Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker and the Kamigawa dragons are among the reprints.
It was followed by Modern Masters 2015 and Modern Masters 2017, and the idea grew into the later Masters sets.
Where You Can Play It
Modern Masters is a reprint set, so legality is a per-card question. Every card was Modern-legal when it was reprinted, and the set itself grants nothing new.
Every card is a reprint, and a reprint doesn't change legality: each card is legal exactly where it already was. Appearing here does not make a card Standard- or Pioneer-legal.
Never Standard- or Pioneer-legal as a set. Its cards are legal wherever they already were: Modern, Legacy, Vintage and Commander for nearly all of them, with Bridge from Below banned in Modern and Chalice of the Void restricted in Vintage. Commons from any set are Pauper-legal; that isn't listed per set here.
Limited
Built to draft well rather than to cover history evenly, with archetypes taken from the blocks it reprints.
Returning block themes
Synergy draft
Spirits and arcane spells from Kamigawa, suspend from Time Spiral, -1/-1 counters and persist from Shadowmoor, and artifacts from Mirrodin each give a two-color pair something to build around.
