Trials on Bolas's plane

What this set is

Amonkhet is a plane shaped like ancient Egypt, where Nicol Bolas rules as God-Pharaoh and young initiates compete in trials for a glorious afterlife. Its five Gods are indestructible creatures that can't attack or block until a condition is met, unlike Theros's devotion Gods.

Exert lets a creature attack for a bonus at the cost of not untapping next turn. Embalm lets you cast a creature card again from your graveyard as a white Zombie token. Aftermath split cards have a second half you can only cast from the graveyard. Cycling returns on thirty-eight cards, along with the cycling dual lands.

Amonkhet Invocations (MP2), stylized reprints of powerful spells, appeared as a rare bonus. Anointed Procession and Approach of the Second Sun are Commander favorites from here.

Themes

Every mechanic in Amonkhet

New

Exert

You may exert the creature as it attacks for a bonus; it won't untap during your next untap step.

New

Embalm

Exile the creature card from your graveyard and pay its embalm cost to create a token copy that's a white Zombie with no mana cost, at sorcery speed.

New

Aftermath

Split cards whose second half can only be cast from your graveyard. Cast the first half from your hand, then the second later.

Returning

Cycling

Pay the cycling cost and discard the card to draw a card. Back on thirty-eight cards, including the cycling dual lands.

Returning

-1/-1 counters

A block-wide theme, with Hapatra and other cards rewarding counters placed on creatures.

Where You Can Play It

Format legality

Amonkhet is Pioneer-legal. The Invocations inside its packs follow each card's own legality.

Not Standard-legal. Standard only ever holds the last few years of sets, so everything this old has long since left it. These cards are still playable in Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Vintage and Commander. Commons from any set are Pauper-legal; that isn't listed per set here.

Limited

The draft format

Drafted as three packs of Amonkhet. Cycling, exert and -1/-1 counters gave most color pairs a clear plan.

UR

Cycling

Spells

Cycle cards for payoffs that trigger on cycling or discarding.
