What this set is

Avatar closed out 2025 with an unusually mechanic-dense set: four brand-new keywords, one per bending discipline, each doing something genuinely different rather than being a reskin of the same idea.

It has no Commander precons at all — but the set itself contains over a hundred legal commanders across every rarity and power level, which is arguably a better deal for Commander players than two fixed decks would have been.

Themes

Every mechanic in Avatar

New

Airbending

A keyword action: exile a permanent or spell, and while it stays exiled its owner may cast it by paying {2} instead of its mana cost. Removal that hands the card back on a discount — disruptive and political at once.

New

Earthbending

Choose a land you control; it becomes a 0/0 creature with haste that is still a land, then gets +1/+1 counters equal to the earthbend number. Manlands you make on demand, with all the risk that implies.

New

Waterbending

A cost-paying method: for each generic mana in a waterbending cost, you may tap an untapped artifact or creature you control instead of paying that mana. Convoke's cousin, extended to artifacts.

New

Firebending

Always carries a number. Whenever a creature you control with firebending attacks, you add that much red mana — and crucially you don't lose it when combat ends, so it funds a post-combat main phase.

Limited

Ten draft archetypes

A full ten-pair format, one for every combination, each themed on a bending style: waterbenders control and react, firebenders push tempo, earthbenders ramp and take over late, airbenders manoeuvre around problems. The colour balance came out unusually even, with nearly every pair viable.

All ten two-colour pairs

Full ten-pair format

Every pairing is supported and, unusually, no colour lagged badly behind. Our sources described the archetypes by bending style rather than naming all ten pairs, so we've kept the summary at that level instead of inventing the specifics.

FAQ

Common questions

When did the MTG Avatar: The Last Airbender set release?

November 21, 2025, with prerelease events from November 14, under the set code TLA. It was the last Magic set of 2025.

What are the four bending mechanics?

Airbending exiles a permanent or spell and lets its owner cast it for {2} while exiled. Earthbending turns a land you control into a 0/0 hasty creature that is still a land, with +1/+1 counters equal to the earthbend number. Waterbending lets you tap untapped artifacts or creatures instead of paying generic mana. Firebending adds red mana whenever a creature with it attacks, and that mana survives the end of combat.

Does Avatar: The Last Airbender have Commander precons?

No. It shipped without any Commander preconstructed decks — but the set itself contains over a hundred legal commanders across every rarity, so there is plenty to build with.

What are the Avatar draft archetypes?

All ten two-colour pairs are supported, themed by bending style: waterbenders control and react, firebenders push tempo, earthbenders ramp into a strong late game, and airbenders manoeuvre around problems. The colour balance came out unusually even.
