Universes Beyond
Spider-Man is really two sets at once. What you open at a Prerelease is Marvel's Spider-Man; what you play on Arena and MTGO is Through the Omenpaths, a different assembly of the same material. It also debuted Pick-Two Draft, where you take two cards per pick.
That smaller structure means five allied two-colour archetypes rather than ten, and 193 cards in the main set. Web-slinging is the mechanic people remember, and it is the most fun the set has to offer.
Themes
Web-slinging
The set's signature mechanic and its most enjoyable one — swinging in on a discount by returning something you already control. It anchors the format's most iconic archetype.
Mayhem
Lets you cast a card you've discarded as though it were still in your hand, usually at a reduced cost. It turns discard from a cost into a setup step, and it is why the discard pairs work.
Transforming DFCs
Double-faced cards where each side has its own characteristics — five legendary creatures can transform, which is how the set handles secret identities.
Connive
Back from Streets of New Capenna: draw then discard, and take a +1/+1 counter if you pitched a nonland. It sits neatly on top of the set's discard themes.
Limited
Built for Pick-Two Draft, so five allied colour pairs rather than the usual ten. Two of them run on discard, which mayhem converts into an advantage rather than a cost.
Modified Creatures
Go-Tall
Cares about creatures that have been equipped, enchanted or given counters.
Discard
Value
Discards on purpose, then casts the cards anyway with mayhem.
Discard Aggro
Aggro
The aggressive half of the discard plan, converting pitched cards into pressure.
Web-Slinging
Tempo
The set's marquee archetype, and the reason to draft it.
Counters
Midrange
Connive and +1/+1 counters, growing threats while smoothing draws.
