A cross-plane race
Aetherdrift is a race across planes, and its design commits to that harder than the theme alone would suggest. Speed is an actual tracked value — you start at zero, hit 1 the moment a "start your engines!" permanent lands, and climb toward max speed by making opponents lose life on your turn.
The other half of the set is Exhaust: powerful activated abilities you only get to use once per permanent. Between the two, the format is about sequencing — when to spend your one big activation, and how fast you can get to the payoffs that only switch on at max speed.
Themes
Start your engines! / Speed
The first time you control a permanent with start your engines!, your speed becomes 1 immediately — nobody gets to respond and kill it first. From there, whenever one or more opponents lose life during your turn and your speed is below 4, it goes up by one. That trigger only fires once per turn, so racing to max speed takes deliberate work.
Exhaust
An activated ability you can use only once per permanent. Worth knowing the loophole: if the permanent leaves the battlefield and comes back — bounced, flickered, reanimated — the exhaust ability is available again, which turns blink effects into genuine value engines here.
Max speed
Abilities that only switch on once your speed hits 4. They are the payoff the whole speed mechanic exists to reach, and they define both of the set's black-red and white-black archetypes.
Vehicles & Mounts
Both come back and share the set's spotlight, crewed and saddled respectively. Four of the ten draft archetypes lean on one or the other.
Energy
Kaladesh's energy counters return, most visibly in the Living Energy Commander deck built around artificers and artifact creatures.
Limited
A full ten-pair format, split between the set's four pillars: artifacts, speed, exhaust, and vehicles-and-mounts. Exhaust anchors both green pairs, which are the two decks that most reward building around the mechanic.
Artifact Value
Midrange
Grinding artifact synergies rather than a rush — the more controlling of the two artifact decks.
Artifact Bleeder
Attrition
Artifacts as an incremental drain, chipping the opponent down rather than racing them.
Max Speed Aggro
Aggro
The most direct read on speed: apply pressure early, hit max speed fast, cash in the payoffs.
Exhaust Midrange
Midrange
Strong on-curve threats followed by powerful exhaust activations as the game goes long. One of the set's two exhaust homes.
Vehicles & Mounts Midrange
Midrange
The grindier vehicles deck, happy to trade early and take over with bigger machines.
Max Speed Attrition
Attrition
Reaches max speed through incremental drain instead of a fast clock.
Discard Aggro
Aggro
Aggression backed by discard — pressure on the board and on the hand at once.
Graveyard
Value
The set's recursion deck, and a natural fit for re-using exhaust abilities on creatures you bring back.
Vehicles & Mounts Aggro
Aggro
The aggressive vehicles pair — crew up early and keep attacking.
Exhaust Ramp
Ramp
Builds mana fast, because the best exhaust abilities cost a lot and you want them online early.
Commander
Two rather than the usual four, both three-colour.
Living Energy
Temur · GUR · Saheeli Rai
Energy, artificers and artifact creatures, with Saheeli Rai fronting it.
Eternal Might
Esper · WUB · Temmet
Zombies and discard, built around Eternalize, led by Temmet.
Building one of these into something of your own? The precon buying guide covers how to judge a deck, and the Commander deck template is the shape to build toward.
FAQ
Aetherdrift released on February 14, 2025, with prerelease events from February 7. Its set codes are DFT for the main set and DRC for the Commander decks.
The first time you control a permanent with “start your engines!” your speed becomes 1 immediately, so nobody can respond by removing it first. After that, whenever one or more opponents lose life during your turn and your speed is below 4, it increases by one — but that trigger fires only once per turn.
Exhaust abilities are activated abilities you can only use once per permanent. The important exception: if the permanent leaves the battlefield and returns — bounced, flickered or reanimated — its exhaust ability becomes available again, which makes blink effects unusually strong here.
Exhaust anchors the two green pairs — red-green Exhaust Midrange and green-blue Exhaust Ramp — and both reward building deliberately around the mechanic. The black-red and white-black pairs are the two max speed decks.
Two rather than the usual four: Living Energy, a Temur energy and artificer deck fronted by Saheeli Rai, and Eternal Might, an Esper zombies-and-discard deck led by Temmet.
