Tarkir's past, rewritten
Fate Reforged is the middle set of the Khans of Tarkir block, and it is set in the past. Sarkhan Vol travels back 1,280 years, saves the spirit dragon Ugin, and changes the timeline so that dragons survive on Tarkir. The five clans of Khans are shown here before they fell, alongside the five dragon broods that will replace them.
Its new mechanics each belong to a clan: manifest (Sultai), bolster (Abzan) and dash (Mardu), plus returning prowess, delve and ferocious. Ugin, the Spirit Dragon is the set's best-known card, and the five dragon legends, such as Atarka, World Render, are its Commander favorites.
Themes
Manifest
Put the top card of your library onto the battlefield face down as a 2/2 creature. If it is a creature card, you can turn it face up for its mana cost.
Bolster
Put that many +1/+1 counters on the creature you control with the least toughness. The Abzan way of making its whole team sturdier over time.
Dash
Cast the creature for its dash cost instead; it gains haste and returns to your hand at end of turn. Mardu's repeatable hit-and-run attacks.
Prowess, delve and ferocious
Three of the Khans clan mechanics continue.
