One card from every set

What this set is

Masters 25 is the 25th-anniversary reprint set, and its organising rule is the reason to know about it: at least one card in it comes from every set Magic had printed to that point. That constraint is what shapes the contents, so it holds a lot of cards nobody would otherwise reprint.

There is nothing new in it and no new mechanics. The useful question about any card in it is where that card was already legal, because a reprint here does not change that.

As a Limited format it is uneven by construction. A card pool assembled to cover twenty-five years does not produce a smooth curve, so games are decided by individual cards more often than by a two-colour plan.

Themes

Every mechanic in Masters 25

Returning

No new mechanics

Every card is a reprint, so nothing is introduced. Whatever mechanics you meet belong to the cards themselves, pulled from across the whole history of the game rather than from a set theme.

New

One card from every set

The anniversary constraint, and the only thing structurally new here. It is a rule about the contents rather than about how a card plays, and it is why the set reaches into corners no ordinary reprint set would.

Where You Can Play It

Format legality

Masters 25 is a case where per-card legality matters more than per-set. It is a reprint set, so there is nothing for the set itself to grant.

Standard was never in play for this set, so no rotation has ever touched it. Nothing here leaves Modern, Legacy, Vintage or Commander either. Commons from any set are Pauper-legal; that isn't listed per set here.

Limited

The draft format

Assembled to cover twenty-five years rather than to draft well, so expect a format decided by the strongest cards in the pack rather than by a well-assembled archetype.

Power over synergy

High-variance Limited

The pool spans the whole game, so power levels sit unevenly next to each other. Take the strongest card and worry about the plan afterwards.

FAQ

Common questions

Is Masters 25 Standard legal?

The set grants no legality of its own. Every card in it is a reprint, and a reprint does not change legality, so each card is legal exactly where it already was. Plenty are not Standard-, Pioneer- or Modern-legal.

What makes Masters 25 different from other Masters sets?

Its anniversary constraint: at least one card in it comes from every set Magic had printed to that point. That is a rule about the contents rather than about how any card plays, and it is why the set reaches into corners no ordinary reprint set would.

Is Masters 25 good to draft?

It is uneven by construction. A pool assembled to cover twenty-five years does not produce a smooth curve, so games are decided by individual cards more often than by a two-colour plan.

Does Masters 25 have new cards?

No. It is reprints only, with no new cards and no new mechanics.

Playing Masters 25 in Commander?

TurnZero HQ keeps deck records, MMR, and moments for every Commander night, so you can see which new cards are actually earning their slot.
