What this set is

Double Masters is the first of the double-rare Masters sets: every draft booster holds two rares or mythics and two foils rather than the usual one of each. Double Masters 2022 repeated the format two years later, and this is where it came from.

There are no new cards and no new mechanics. What the set is for is reprint access, which means the only legality question worth asking about anything in it is where that card was already legal, because a reprint here does not change that.

Boxes also carried a pair of foil box toppers from a list of thirty-odd high-value reprints, which is the part that set the price of the product and the part most people bought it for.

Returning

No new mechanics

Every card is a reprint, so nothing is introduced. Whatever mechanics you meet belong to the cards themselves, drawn from across Magic's history rather than from a set theme.

New

Two rares per pack

The set's one structural change, and the one it is named for. Two rares or mythics and two foils in every draft booster, which makes a far higher-powered Limited format than a normal expansion.

Where You Can Play It

Format legality

Double Masters is the case where per-card legality matters more than per-set. It is a reprint set, so there is nothing for the set itself to grant.

Standard was never in play for this set, so no rotation has ever touched it. Nothing here leaves Modern, Legacy, Vintage or Commander either. Commons from any set are Pauper-legal; that isn't listed per set here.

Limited

The draft format

Two rares a pack means the format is decided by individual cards far more often than by a two-color plan. The usual advice about staying open matters less here than taking the most powerful card in the pack.

Power over synergy

High-powered Limited

With twice the rares, most games are settled by the strongest cards rather than by a well-assembled archetype. Draft accordingly, and expect games to end faster than in a normal set.

FAQ

Common questions

Is Double Masters Standard legal?

The set grants no legality of its own. Every card in it is a reprint, and a reprint does not change legality, so each card is legal exactly where it already was. Plenty of them are not Standard-, Pioneer- or Modern-legal.

What makes Double Masters different from a normal set?

Two rares or mythics and two foils in every draft booster instead of one of each. That doubles the density of powerful cards and is the whole reason the Limited format plays differently.

What are the Double Masters box toppers?

A pair of foil cards included with a booster box, drawn from a short list of high-value reprints. They set the price of the product and are the main reason boxes sold.

Is Double Masters the same as Double Masters 2022?

No, they are separate sets two years apart with separate card pools and separate set codes (2XM and 2X2). Double Masters came first and established the double-rare format that the 2022 set repeated.

Is Double Masters good to draft?

It is powerful rather than balanced. With twice the rares, most games are settled by the strongest individual cards, so taking the best card usually beats staying open and reading signals.

Playing Double Masters in Commander?

TurnZero HQ keeps deck records, MMR, and moments for every Commander night, so you can see which new cards are actually earning their slot.
