Quick verdict

Quantum Quandrix is one of the easier precons to make strong, because its commander doubles every token you make and the deck already has plenty of token makers. With Adrix and Nev, Twincasters out, Hornet Queen brings eight Insects and Rite of Replication kicked makes ten copies. Its weak spots are a few cards that don't make tokens at all, little protection for a wide board against a wipe, and a mana base with too many tapped lands.

Main plan Token doubling: make tokens with spells and creatures, let Adrix and Nev double every batch, then overrun the table with Fractals and Beasts

TurnZero HQ rates Quantum Quandrix a 2 out of 5 on difficulty and a 4 out of 5 on power, as it comes in the box. That is our editorial read, not an official Wizards rating. The full hundred cards are on the Quantum Quandrix decklist page, and every other precon we cover is on the precon directory.

How the precon plays

Adrix and Nev, Twincasters is a four-mana 2/2 with ward {2} and one static ability: if one or more tokens would be created under your control, twice that many are created instead. That applies to every kind of token, so Fractals, Beasts, Insects and copies of your creatures all double.

The rest of the deck supplies tokens to double. Kazandu Tuskcaller makes Elephants every turn once leveled, Rampaging Baloths makes a Beast on every land drop, and Biomathematician and Deekah, Fractal Theorist make Fractals. Copy spells like Rite of Replication and Spitting Image turn your best creature into two or more.

The deck draws off its board size. Shamanic Revelation draws a card for each creature you control, Idol of Oblivion draws whenever you made a token that turn, and Garruk, Primal Hunter draws cards equal to your biggest creature's power. Guardian Augmenter gives Adrix and Nev hexproof and +2/+2 so it sticks around.

What works out of the box

What needs improvement

A few cards don't support the token plan. Spawning Kraken only makes tokens when a Kraken, Leviathan, Octopus or Serpent deals combat damage, and it is nearly the only one in the deck. Arashi, the Sky Asunder hurts flying creatures, including your own Insects. Theoretical Duplication only does something if an opponent casts a creature that turn.

The deck's whole plan is a wide board, and it has almost nothing to protect that board from a wipe or to stop a game-winning spell. The mana base also has a lot of tapped lands: Tranquil Thicket , Lonely Sandbar , Mosswort Bridge , Llanowar Reborn and several more.

Upgrade ideas

Each upgrade below starts from something the deck does poorly and says what a replacement card has to do. The cards named are examples, not the only answer: if you own something else that does the same job, or a newer printing does it better, it goes in the same slot. Make one change at a time and play a few games between them, so you can tell which change helped. The general method is in how to upgrade a Commander precon →

1. Add cheap, repeatable token makers

Adrix and Nev doubles every token, so the best cards in the deck are ones that make tokens every turn rather than once. Cheap ones get going before the first board wipe.

What to look for Creatures or enchantments costing five mana or less that make a token every turn, every land drop, or every upkeep.

Cut, for example

✕

Spawning Kraken A six-mana 6/6 that makes a 9/9 only when a Kraken, Leviathan, Octopus or Serpent deals combat damage to a player. Apart from itself and Reef Worm's last token, the deck has none, so it has to connect on its own.

✕

Arashi, the Sky Asunder Deals damage to fliers. Its channel ability kills your own flying Insects as easily as an opponent's fliers.

✕

Theoretical Duplication Only copies a creature an opponent puts onto the battlefield this turn. Too situational for a slot.

2. Protect the board

A board of thirty tokens is the deck's whole investment. One board wipe resets it, and the deck currently has no way to stop or survive one.

What to look for Cheap instants that counter a sorcery or give your permanents indestructible. Two mana or less lets you hold one up while still building.

Cut, for example

✕

Kaseto, Orochi Archmage Makes a creature unblockable for two mana and pumps Snakes. The deck has only two other Snakes, and it already wins by going wide.

✕

Crafty Cutpurse Steals tokens an opponent would create this turn. It needs an opponent to make tokens while you hold mana open, which rarely lines up.

3. Give the wide board a finisher

The deck makes a lot of bodies but has only Biomass Mutation and Return of the Wildspeaker to turn them into a lethal attack. More team pumps close games faster.

What to look for Cards that give every creature you control a large boost or trample, or that double your tokens again.

Cut, for example

✕

Desolation Twin Ten mana for a 10/10 and a 10/10 token, or two tokens with Adrix and Nev out. Strong if you can cast it, but the deck rarely gets there before the game is decided.

✕

Geometric Nexus Gathers counters from instants and sorceries, then costs six to cash in. Slow for a deck that wins through creatures.

4. Fix the mana base

The deck plays several lands that enter tapped and makes plenty of plays at three and four mana. Untapped duals help it cast Adrix and Nev on time.

What to look for Lands that tap for green or blue and usually enter untapped. See the land and mana base guide for more.

Win conditions

The upgraded deck wins by attacking with more tokens than the table can block. Adrix and Nev, Twincasters doubles every Elephant, Beast and Insect, Rite of Replication or Spitting Image copies your best creature, and Overwhelming Stampede or Beastmaster Ascension turns the board into lethal damage. Hornet Queen doubled is often enough to hold off opponents while you build.

Who should buy this precon

A good first Commander deck for a player who likes big boards and simple effects. Adrix and Nev's ability is easy to follow, and the deck rewards playing token makers and attacking. The board can get large, so expect to track a lot of tokens, but the decisions themselves are straightforward.
