The two-color Gods arrive

What this set is

Born of the Gods is the second set of the Theros block. Theros had five mono-colored Gods; this set adds five two-color Gods for the allied color pairs, each needing devotion to both its colors to become a creature.

Its new mechanics are inspired, which triggers whenever the creature untaps during your untap step, and tribute, where an opponent chooses between letting the creature enter with +1/+1 counters or giving you its bonus effect.

Courser of Kruphix and the Archetype cycle are from here, and so are three more of the scry lands, the Temples, that Theros started.

Themes

Every mechanic in Born of the Gods

New

Inspired

An ability word that triggers whenever the creature becomes untapped, which in practice means after it attacked or was tapped last turn. It rewards attacking with creatures that can survive it.

New

Tribute

As the creature enters, an opponent chooses: it gets the tribute number of +1/+1 counters, or, if they don't pay tribute, you get its other effect. The opponent picks whichever hurts them less.

Returning

Heroic, bestow, monstrosity and devotion

Theros's mechanics all continue, with devotion now powering the two-color Gods.

Where You Can Play It

Format legality

Born of the Gods shipped under a single code and is legal in Pioneer, Modern and the eternal formats.

Not Standard-legal. Standard only ever holds the last few years of sets, so everything this old has long since left it. These cards are still playable in Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Vintage and Commander. Commons from any set are Pauper-legal; that isn't listed per set here.

Limited

The draft format

Drafted as Born of the Gods, Theros, Theros. The Theros archetypes continued, with inspired creatures giving the slower decks a reason to attack.

Theros pairs, deepened

Heroic and devotion

The heroic and devotion decks from Theros got more support, and inspired made attacking with smaller creatures profitable.

Boosters, precons and singles from Born of the Gods are on TCGplayer.

FAQ

Common questions

How do the Born of the Gods Gods become creatures?

Each needs devotion to both of its colors combined to reach seven. A hybrid symbol counts once toward that total.

What does tribute do?

As a creature with tribute enters, an opponent chooses whether to put the listed number of +1/+1 counters on it. If they don't, its other ability happens.

Playing Born of the Gods in Commander?

TurnZero HQ keeps deck records, MMR, and moments for every Commander night, so you can see which new cards are actually earning their slot.
