Universes Beyond

What this set is

Assassin's Creed is a smaller Universes Beyond release that went straight to Modern rather than Standard. It predates the Aligning the Universes policy that later made Universes Beyond sets Standard-legal.

Its one new mechanic is freerunning, which is a genuinely good fit for the source material: it rewards you for having already connected with an Assassin this turn.

New

Freerunning

Cast a spell for a reduced freerunning cost if an Assassin you control, or your commander, dealt combat damage to a player this turn. Casting it this way doesn't change the spell's mana value, which matters for anything that cares about that number.

Where You Can Play It

Format legality

Assassin's Creed shipped as a single code, and it went straight to Modern rather than Standard. It predates the Aligning the Universes policy that made later Universes Beyond sets Standard-legal.

Standard was never in play for this set, so the February 2027 rotation doesn't touch it, and nothing here rotates out of Modern, Legacy, Vintage or Commander. Commons from any set are Pauper-legal; that isn't listed per set here.

Limited

The draft format

A smaller set than a tentpole expansion, built around Assassins and the freerunning payoff rather than a full ten-pair archetype grid.

FAQ

Common questions

Is Assassin's Creed Standard legal?

No. ACR cards are legal in Modern, Commander, Legacy and Vintage, but not Standard or Pioneer. It predates the Aligning the Universes policy that later made Universes Beyond sets Standard-legal, starting with Final Fantasy in 2025.

When did the Assassin's Creed set release?

July 5, 2024, under the set code ACR, as a smaller Universes Beyond release rather than a full tentpole expansion.

How does freerunning work?

You can cast a spell for its cheaper freerunning cost if an Assassin you control, or your commander, dealt combat damage to a player this turn. Casting it that way doesn't change the spell's mana value, which matters for anything that checks that number.

Is Assassin's Creed worth drafting?

It's a smaller set built around Assassins and the freerunning payoff rather than a full ten-archetype grid, so the format is narrower than a tentpole expansion. The central loop, connecting with an Assassin and then cashing in the discount, is the reason to play it.

Playing Assassin's Creed in Commander?

TurnZero HQ keeps deck records, MMR, and moments for every Commander night, so you can see which new cards are actually earning their slot.
