Magic's western

What this set is

Thunder Junction is Magic's western, and it arrived with an unusually dense mechanical payload: five new mechanics plus a new game term. It also shipped with a bonus sheet, Breaking News, on top of the main set and Commander decks.

The term worth knowing is Outlaw, not a mechanic but a category, covering Assassins, Mercenaries, Pirates, Rogues and Warlocks. A pile of cards care about whether you control one, which quietly ties five creature types into a single typal theme.

Themes

Every mechanic in Thunder Junction

New

Plot

Pay a plot cost at sorcery speed to exile the card, then cast it for free on a later turn. It smooths your curve by letting you bank a spell on a turn you'd otherwise waste mana.

New

Spree

Modality on instants and sorceries: a spree spell has several effects, each with its own additional cost, and you pick any combination. Enormously flexible, and it scales from a cheap trick to a blowout.

New

Crime

You commit a crime whenever a spell or ability you control targets an opponent, something they control, or a card in their graveyard. Broad enough to trigger almost incidentally, which is the point.

New

Saddle

Mounts work like Vehicles with a different verb: tap other creatures with total power at least the saddle number to switch the Mount on for the turn.

New

Outlaws

A game term rather than a keyword. An Outlaw is any Assassin, Mercenary, Pirate, Rogue or Warlock: five creature types bundled into one typal payoff.

Where You Can Play It

Format legality

A release usually ships more than one set code, and they don't all share the same legality: the main set is Standard-legal while Commander cards are eternal-only. Here's each code in Thunder Junction.

Standard legality is current as of August 2026. There is no rotation in 2026, but Thunder Junction is a 2024 set: it leaves Standard at the February 2027 rotation, when 2025–2027 becomes the pool. Its cards stay legal in Pioneer, Modern and the eternal formats after that. Commons from any set are Pauper-legal; that isn't listed per set here.

Limited

Ten draft archetypes

A full ten-pair format. The mechanics spread across it rather than each owning a pair. Crime in particular turns up almost everywhere, since targeting an opponent at all counts.

All ten two-colour pairs

Full ten-pair format

Thunder Junction supports every colour pair. Its five mechanics and the Outlaw type cut across the format rather than mapping one-to-one onto archetypes, so we've kept the summary at that level rather than inventing ten themes.

Commander

Commander decks

Four precons shipped under the OTC code alongside the main set.

Four Commander decks

OTC

Sold alongside the main set, tied to the set's outlaw factions and mechanics.

Building one of these into something of your own? The precon buying guide covers how to judge a deck, and the Commander deck template is the shape to build toward.

FAQ

Common questions

When did Outlaws of Thunder Junction release?

April 19, 2024, with prerelease events from April 12. Four set codes shipped together: OTJ, OTC for the Commander decks, OTP for the Breaking News bonus sheet, and SPG for Special Guests.

What is an Outlaw in Magic?

Outlaw is a game term rather than a keyword. It covers any card with the Assassin, Mercenary, Pirate, Rogue or Warlock creature type: five types bundled together so cards can care about all of them at once.

How does plot work?

Pay a card's plot cost at sorcery speed to exile it, then cast it for free on a later turn. It smooths your curve by letting you spend leftover mana banking a spell for later.

How does crime work?

You commit a crime whenever a spell or ability you control targets an opponent, a permanent or spell they control, or a card in their graveyard. The definition is broad on purpose, so removal and interaction trigger it almost incidentally.

Is the Breaking News bonus sheet Standard legal?

A bonus-sheet printing doesn't change a card's legality, so each card is legal wherever that card already was. So a Breaking News version of a Standard-legal card is fine in Standard, and a reprint of an older card is not.

Playing Thunder Junction in Commander?

TurnZero HQ keeps deck records, MMR, and moments for every Commander night, so you can see which new cards are actually earning their slot.
