Straight to Modern

What this set is

Modern Horizons sets exist to add cards straight to Modern without passing through Standard, and the third is the most consequential of them. If you only know it by reputation, that reputation is deserved: it reshaped Modern on arrival.

Three themes carry the set (energy, Eldrazi and modified) and they define most of its archetypes. The Eldrazi are the headline, and the single most important creature type in the set.

Returning

Energy

Kaladesh's alternate resource, back and pointed at aggression. Cards generate energy counters and spend them for extra effects, which rewards decks that can bank it early and cash it in fast.

Returning

Eldrazi

The set's defining creature type and its biggest Modern impact. Large colourless threats with cast triggers, supported well enough to make Eldrazi a real deck rather than a top-end curiosity.

Returning

Modified

A creature is modified if it has a counter on it, is equipped, or is enchanted by an Aura you control. One condition covering three different build-arounds, which is why it glues an archetype together.

Where You Can Play It

Format legality

Modern Horizons 3 never entered Standard, and that is the whole design of the line: these sets print straight into Modern, skipping Standard and Pioneer entirely. Both of its codes are eternal-format cards from the day they were released.

Standard was never in play for this set, so the February 2027 rotation doesn't touch it, and nothing here rotates out of Modern, Legacy, Vintage or Commander. Commons from any set are Pauper-legal; that isn't listed per set here.

Limited

The draft archetypes

Energy, Eldrazi and modified define most of the format's archetypes. Modern Horizons drafts are unusually powerful by design, because the card pool is built for Modern, not for a balanced Limited curve.

Energy

Aggro

Generates energy early and spends it on efficient aggressive threats.

Eldrazi

Big Colourless

The set's marquee theme: large colourless creatures with cast triggers.

Modified

Counters / Auras / Equipment

Counts counters, Equipment and Auras as one condition, so three different build-arounds feed the same payoffs.

Commander

The Commander decks

Four precons under the M3C code, including an energy deck that became a popular Eldrazi alternative.

Four Commander decks

M3C

Eternal-legal precons sold alongside the set.

FAQ

Common questions

Is Modern Horizons 3 Standard legal?

No, and that's by design. Modern Horizons sets skip both Standard and Pioneer and go straight into Modern. MH3 cards are legal in Modern, Legacy, Vintage and Commander; the M3C Commander cards are eternal-only.

When did Modern Horizons 3 release?

June 14, 2024, with prerelease events from June 7, under the set codes MH3 and M3C.

What are the main themes of Modern Horizons 3?

Three: energy, Eldrazi and modified. They define most of the set's archetypes, and the Eldrazi are the single most important creature type in it.

What counts as modified?

A creature is modified if it has one or more counters on it, is equipped, or is enchanted by an Aura you control. One condition covering three different build-arounds, which is what lets it hold an archetype together.

Why is Modern Horizons 3 so powerful?

Because it's built for Modern rather than Standard. The card pool is designed to compete in an established eternal format, so power level is calibrated against Modern staples rather than against a rotating Standard.

Playing Modern Horizons 3 in Commander?

TurnZero HQ keeps deck records, MMR, and moments for every Commander night, so you can see which new cards are actually earning their slot.
