Inventors and energy
Kaladesh is Chandra's home plane, a city of inventors powered by aether. The set is full of artifacts, and its mechanics are about building: fabricate makes either counters or Servo tokens, crew lets your creatures operate Vehicles, and energy is a resource you store and spend.
Energy counters ({E}) are a player counter you get from some effects and pay for others. Vehicles are artifacts that become creatures when you crew them, tapping creatures with enough total power. Both mechanics have come back several times.
Kaladesh Inventions (MPS), premium artifact reprints, appeared as a rare bonus in packs. For Commander, Panharmonicon, Aetherflux Reservoir, Inventors' Fair and the fastlands like Concealed Courtyard are from here.
Themes
Energy
A player counter, {E}. Some effects give you energy and others let you pay it. Unlike mana, it stays until you spend it.
Vehicles and crew
A Vehicle is an artifact that becomes an artifact creature until end of turn when you crew it: tap creatures you control with total power at least the crew number.
Fabricate
When the creature enters, choose: put that many +1/+1 counters on it, or create that many 1/1 Servo artifact creature tokens.
Where You Can Play It
Kaladesh is Pioneer-legal. The Inventions inside its packs follow each card's own legality.
Inventions are reprints of existing artifacts, so each is legal wherever that card already was.
Not Standard-legal. Standard only ever holds the last few years of sets, so everything this old has long since left it. These cards are still playable in Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Vintage and Commander. Commons from any set are Pauper-legal; that isn't listed per set here.
Limited
Drafted as three packs of Kaladesh. Artifacts, energy and Vehicles cut across the color pairs.
