Four colors and partner
Commander 2016 gave Commander its first four-color legends. Each of the five decks leaves out one color and is led by a four-color commander, such as Atraxa, Praetors' Voice, which became one of the most played commanders of all.
It also introduced partner. A legend with partner can be paired with another partner legend, and the two share command as a pair of commanders, so the deck's color identity is both of theirs combined. Fifteen partner legends shipped across the decks, including Thrasios, Triton Hero and Tymna the Weaver.
Undaunted, a cost reduction for each opponent you have, was its other new mechanic.
Themes
Partner
You can have two commanders if both have partner. Your color identity is the combination of both, and each is tracked separately for commander damage and commander tax.
Undaunted
The spell costs {1} less to cast for each opponent you have, so it is cheapest in a full multiplayer game.
Where You Can Play It
Commander 2016 shipped as five precon decks under a single code. Its new cards are legal in Commander, Legacy and Vintage. Reprints keep their own legality.
Never Standard-, Pioneer- or Modern-legal for its new cards. Among the reprints, Sol Ring and Windfall are banned in Legacy and restricted in Vintage, and Treasure Cruise is banned in Modern and Legacy. Commons from any set are Pauper-legal; that isn't listed per set here.
