Five colleges, five enemy pairs

What this set is

Strixhaven is a magic university on Arcavios, built around five colleges, each one an enemy color pair. That is the structural choice that shapes the whole set: five archetypes rather than ten, and each one a genuine faction with its own dean, mechanic lean and identity.

Its most consequential contribution is not the theme, though. Ward became an evergreen keyword here, which means it is now a permanent part of Magic's vocabulary rather than a one-set mechanic. Learn and Lessons are the more visible novelty: a sideboard you draw from mid-game.

Themes

Every mechanic in Strixhaven

New

Ward

Whenever a permanent with ward becomes the target of an opponent's spell or ability, counter it unless they pay the ward cost. Introduced here and made evergreen, so it now appears in essentially every set.

New

Learn and Lessons

Learn lets you either fetch a Lesson card from outside the game, usually your sideboard, or discard a card to draw one. Lessons are a new spell subtype, so a Limited deck effectively gets a second, smaller library to reach into.

New

Magecraft

An ability word triggering whenever you cast or copy an instant or sorcery. Copying counts, which is what makes it more than a spells-matter reskin.

New

Modal double-faced Deans

Each college's dean is one card with a face for each of its two colors, so you choose which half you are casting. A cycle that states each faction's identity twice over.

Where You Can Play It

Format legality

Strixhaven has left Standard, but that is the only format it left. It shipped three codes, and they did not share a legality even when it was current.

Strixhaven left Standard at the September 2022 rotation, the one Dominaria United triggered, alongside Zendikar Rising and the rest of that rotation year. A rotation only ever removes cards from Standard, so everything here is still playable in Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Vintage and Commander. Commons from any set are Pauper-legal; that isn't listed per set here.

Limited

Five college archetypes

Five enemy color pairs rather than ten archetypes, which makes the format unusually legible: the college you are in tells you what your deck does.

Silverquill

White-black, inklings and aggression

Go wide with Inkling tokens and pump them, the most aggressive college.

Prismari

Blue-red, instants and sorceries

Magecraft and big spells, with Treasure to get there.

Witherbloom

Black-green, life and death

Drain and gain, using life as a resource rather than a cushion.

Lorehold

Red-white, Spirits and artifacts

History-matters, with Spirit tokens and cheap aggressive bodies.

Quandrix

Green-blue, tokens and counters

Fractals, doubling and ramp, the slowest of the five.

Commander

The five Commander decks

One per college, and the year's Commander product rather than a separate release.

Silverquill Statement

Breena, the Demagogue

White-black, on going wide and card advantage.

Prismari Performance

Zaffai, Thunder Conductor

Blue-red spellslinger.

Witherbloom Witchcraft

Willowdusk, Essence Seer

Black-green lifegain and drain.

Lorehold Legacies

Osgir, the Reconstructor

Red-white artifacts and reanimation.

Quantum Quandrix

Adrix and Nev, Twincasters

Green-blue token doubling.

Building one of these into something of your own? The precon buying guide covers how to judge a deck, and the Commander deck template is the shape to build toward.

FAQ

Common questions

Is Strixhaven still Standard legal?

No. It left Standard at the September 2022 rotation, the one Dominaria United triggered, along with Zendikar Rising, Kaldheim and Adventures in the Forgotten Realms. STX cards are still legal in Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Vintage and Commander.

What are the five Strixhaven colleges?

Silverquill (white-black), Prismari (blue-red), Witherbloom (black-green), Lorehold (red-white) and Quandrix (green-blue). Every one is an enemy color pair, which is why the draft format has five archetypes rather than the usual ten.

How do learn and Lessons work?

Learn lets you either reveal a Lesson card you own from outside the game, normally your sideboard, and put it into your hand, or discard a card to draw a card. Lesson is a new spell subtype, so a Limited deck effectively gets a small second library to reach into.

What is magecraft?

An ability word that triggers whenever you cast or copy an instant or sorcery spell. Copying counting is what separates it from a plain spells-matter trigger.

Did ward start in Strixhaven?

Yes. Ward was introduced here and made an evergreen keyword, which means it is now a permanent part of Magic's vocabulary and appears in essentially every set since.

Is the Mystical Archive Standard legal?

No. Mystical Archive is a bonus sheet, and a bonus-sheet printing does not change a card's legality. Each card stays legal wherever it already was.

Playing Strixhaven in Commander?

TurnZero HQ keeps deck records, MMR, and moments for every Commander night, so you can see which new cards are actually earning their slot.
