Instants and sorceries, five ways
Secrets of Strixhaven is a spells set. Instants and sorceries are the spine of every archetype, and each of the five colleges gets its own mechanic that defines how it wants to cast them — which makes college identity mechanical rather than just flavour.
Three products ship together: the main set (SOS), the Commander precons (SOC), and a Mystical Archive-style bonus sheet (SOA) reprinting spells in alternate treatments. Converge also appears, which is Wizards' way of signalling that three-color wedges are meant to be draftable rather than a trap.
Themes
Prepare
The set's marquee mechanic, and it turns up at every rarity. A creature carries a signature spell in a second frame — the same split layout as Adventure and Omen — and while that creature holds the "prepared" status it can cast a copy of the spell, which un-prepares it. Prepared works as a designation on a permanent, the way suspected did in Murders at Karlov Manor. Some creatures enter prepared; others need a condition met first. Reality Fracture later brings the mechanic back for Hexhaven, a corrupted mirror of this very campus.
Repartee
Silverquill's mechanic. Triggers whenever you cast an instant or sorcery targeting a creature, with different effects per card — a spell-slinging shell that has to point its spells at bodies.
Opus
Prismari's mechanic, rewarding you for casting instants and sorceries and handing out an extra benefit on top. Prismari ended up the most sought-after seat in the format.
Increment
Quandrix's mechanic, fitting the college's long-standing obsession with numbers going up.
Infusion
Witherbloom's mechanic, powering the college's usual life-as-a-resource, sacrifice-friendly game plan.
Flashback
Lorehold's returning mechanic: cast a spell from your graveyard for an increased cost. A natural fit for the aggressive red-white college, and for a set where spells matter more than creatures.
Lesson spells & paradigm
Lessons come back on one cycle of cards carrying paradigm — but note that learn, the mechanic that fetched them last time, does *not* appear in this set. Lessons here are cards you cast, not cards you tutor for.
Converge
Pays off casting spells with more colors of mana, and the main reason the set's wedges hold together.
Limited
Each college owns an enemy-color pair and a mechanic. Worth noting for anyone reading our Reality Fracture coverage: Hexhaven mirrors this structure on the allied-color wheel instead, which is the whole joke of that set.
