Soul of the Duelist Card List and Set Guide

Overview

Soul of the Duelist is a 60-card set released October 1, 2004, with codes SOD-EN001 to SOD-EN060. All 60 cards were new.

Three things start here. It is the first set in this list with the EN language code in its set codes, the first with Ultimate Rares (25 of them, each a second version of a Rare, Super Rare or Ultra Rare card), and the first with LV monsters, which send themselves to the GY to Special Summon their next level from your hand or Deck.

The LV lines are Horus the Black Flame Dragon (LV4, LV6, LV8), Armed Dragon (LV3, LV5, LV7), Mystic Swordsman, Dark Mimic and Ultimate Insect, with Level Up! to skip a step. The set also has Mobius the Frost Monarch and Ninja Grandmaster Sasuke.

Cards and rarities

Soul of the Duelist has 60 set codes, each starting SOD-EN and printed under the artwork on the right. Where a card comes at more than one rarity, every version shares its code, so the table counts set codes at each rarity and a code printed at two rarities is counted twice.

The 25 Ultimate Rares and the 12 codes listed at both Common and Short Print count twice, which is why the rows add up to 97 printings for 60 set codes. TCGplayer prices 81 of the 97. Set completion in TurnZero HQ counts the distinct set codes you own against the set's total, so a card printed at two rarities counts once, with an every-rarity count beside it for collectors chasing each version. The LV monsters

LV monsters are the set's mechanic: each destroys a monster by battle, then trades itself in the End Phase for the next level. These are the three main lines.

Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV6

SOD-EN007

Unaffected by Spell effects. In the End Phase of a turn it destroyed a monster by battle, send it to the GY to Special Summon Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV8 from your hand or Deck.

Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV8

SOD-EN008

Special Summoned only by Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV6. While you control it face-up, it can negate the activation of any Spell Card and destroy it, in either player's turn.

Armed Dragon LV5

SOD-EN014

Send a monster from your hand to the GY to destroy an opponent's monster with equal or lower ATK. After it destroys a monster by battle, it can become Armed Dragon LV7 in the End Phase.

Armed Dragon LV7

SOD-EN015

Special Summoned by Armed Dragon LV5. Send a monster from your hand to the GY to destroy every monster your opponent controls with equal or lower ATK.

Mystic Swordsman LV2

SOD-EN011

Destroys a face-down Defense Position monster it attacks before damage, then can become Mystic Swordsman LV4 in the End Phase.

Cards worth knowing

Set code SOD-EN008

1st Edition market price, October 23, 2026 $599.85

The 1st Edition Ultimate Rare Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV8 (SOD-EN008) is Soul of the Duelist's chase card. It was $599.85 on October 23, 2026, more than twice the 1st Edition Ultimate Rare Armed Dragon LV7 at $231.82.

The same code at Ultra Rare was $30.16 in 1st Edition, and the Unlimited Ultimate Rare was $121.53. Ultimate Rare's embossed foil and the 1st Edition mark together make the difference.

It is a Level 8 FIRE Dragon with 3000 ATK that can only be Special Summoned by Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV6, and while it is face-up it can negate the activation of any Spell Card.

Playing it

No Soul of the Duelist card is on the Forbidden & Limited List as of October 23, 2026, so a deck can run three copies of any of them.

An LV monster only advances if it destroys a monster by battle that turn, so the lines are slow without help. Level Up!, a Common in the set, sends a face-up LV monster you control to the GY and Special Summons the monster its text lists from your hand or Deck, ignoring that monster's Summoning conditions.
