Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Colors: What Each Color Means

In Yu-Gi-Oh!, the color of a card's frame is its card type. Yellow is a Normal Monster, orange an Effect Monster, green a Spell and pink a Trap, and the other colors are monsters with their own summoning methods. Once you know the colors, you can sort a stack of cards, or read an opponent's field, at a glance.

The Yu-Gi-Oh! card color chart

Every Yu-Gi-Oh! card has a frame color, and each color stands for one card type. The color also tells you where the card starts the duel: in your Main Deck, which you draw from, or in your Extra Deck, which sits face down beside it.

Chart of every Yu-Gi-Oh! card frame color. Main Deck: yellow Normal Monsters, orange Effect Monsters, blue Ritual Monsters, two-tone Pendulum Monsters (monster color on top, Spell green below), green Spell Cards and pink Trap Cards. Extra Deck: purple Fusion, white Synchro, black Xyz and dark blue Link Monsters. Gray Tokens are made by card effects and are never in a deck. A note explains that a monster's Attribute is not its color.

Main Deck monsters: yellow, orange and blue

Yellow cards are Normal Monsters. They have no effect. Their text box holds a line of flavor text, which Konami's rulebook says "does not affect the game." Many have higher ATK and DEF than Effect Monsters of the same Level to make up for it. Blue-Eyes White Dragon is the best-known yellow card: Level 8, 3000 ATK, and a description instead of an effect.

Orange cards are Effect Monsters, and they are most of the monsters you will see. The text box is rules: an effect that applies while the card is face up, one you activate in your Main Phase, one that triggers at a set time, or a Quick Effect you can use on your opponent's turn. Several subtypes share the orange frame and are named in the type line instead, such as Flip, Tuner, Spirit, Gemini, Union and Toon. Sangan is a plain example: when it is sent from the field to the Graveyard, you add a monster with 1500 or less ATK from your Deck to your hand.

Blue cards are Ritual Monsters. They go in your Main Deck, but you cannot Normal Summon them. You need the matching Ritual Spell and monsters to Tribute, whose Levels usually add up to the Ritual Monster's Level. Black Luster Soldier is Summoned with Black Luster Ritual, which needs monsters with total Levels of 8 or more.

Extra Deck monsters: purple, white, black and dark blue

Four colors never go in your Main Deck. They start in the Extra Deck, which holds up to 15 cards, and come out through a summoning method that uses cards you already have on the field or in hand. None of them count toward your 40-card Main Deck minimum.

ColorTypeWhat the card asks for
PurpleFusionThe listed Fusion Materials, combined by a Fusion Spell. Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon asks for three Blue-Eyes White Dragon.
WhiteSynchroOne Tuner plus non-Tuner monsters whose Levels add up exactly to its Level. Stardust Dragon is Level 8: 1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuners.
BlackXyzTwo or more monsters of the same Level. Number 39: Utopia asks for 2 Level 4 monsters. Its stars, on the left, are a Rank, not a Level.
Dark blueLinkMonsters equal to its Link Rating, matching its material line. Link Monsters have no Level and no DEF, and they can never be in Defense Position.

Each of these has its own section in the summoning mechanics guide, with the step-by-step procedure and where the monster is allowed to go on the field.

Two-tone cards: Pendulum Monsters

A card whose frame is split in two is a Pendulum Monster. The top half is the color of the monster underneath (orange for an Effect Monster, yellow for a Normal one, and so on), and the bottom half is the green of a Spell, because a Pendulum Monster can also be placed in your leftmost or rightmost Spell & Trap Zone as a Spell. There it is a Pendulum Zone, and the numbers on each side of its middle box, the Pendulum Scale, set which Levels you can Pendulum Summon.

The top color still decides where the card starts. An orange or yellow Pendulum goes in your Main Deck, while a purple, white or black one is a Fusion, Synchro or Xyz Pendulum and starts in your Extra Deck. Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon is orange over green: a Level 7 Effect Monster with a Pendulum Scale of 4.

Spells are green, Traps are pink

Green cards are Spell Cards. You normally activate them during your own Main Phase, straight from your hand. Pink cards are Trap Cards. You have to Set a Trap face down first, and you cannot activate it the turn you Set it, which is why Traps are the cards you use on your opponent's turn. Neither has a Level, ATK or DEF. In the corner where a monster shows its Attribute, they say SPELL or TRAP.

Every Spell and Trap is the same color, so the small icon beside the words "Spell Card" or "Trap Card" tells you the kind. No icon means a Normal Spell or Normal Trap.

CardIcons it can have
Spell (green)Quick-Play, Continuous, Equip, Field and Ritual
Trap (pink)Continuous and Counter

Some Traps become monsters when they resolve and say "This card is also still a Trap." They keep their pink frame. Konami's 2021 Rules Update clarified that such a card occupies only the Monster Zone it is in.

Gray cards: Tokens

A gray card is a Token. Tokens are monsters a card effect creates on the field, so they are never in any of your decks, and when one would leave the field it is removed instead. The rulebook treats a Token on the field as a Normal Monster and says you can use any marker for one, as long as it can show Attack or Defense Position. Some products include Token cards for that purpose, and the gray frame keeps them from being mixed into a deck by mistake.

Attributes are not colors

New players sometimes read the colored circle in a monster's top right corner as the card's color, as in some other card games. It is the monster's Attribute, and there are seven:

AttributeNote
DARKDark Magician, Exodia the Forbidden One, Decode Talker.
LIGHTBlue-Eyes White Dragon, Number 39: Utopia.
EARTHBlack Luster Soldier, Man-Eater Bug.
WATERA common Attribute for Aqua, Fish and Sea Serpent monsters.
FIREAsh Blossom & Joyous Spring.
WINDStardust Dragon, Spear Dragon.
DIVINEOnly a handful of monsters, including the Egyptian God cards such as Obelisk the Tormentor.

The Attribute and the frame color are independent. A DARK monster can be yellow, orange, purple or any other monster color, and many card effects ask for an Attribute ("a LIGHT monster") rather than a card type. Yu-Gi-Oh! has no colored resource you have to pay, so unlike Magic, an Attribute never limits which cards you can put in a deck together. The guide to reading a card covers the Attribute and every other part of the card.

Why the color matters when you play

The color is the first thing to check on an opponent's card, because it tells you what the card can do before you read the text:

You seeIt tells you
A face-down card in your opponent's Spell & Trap ZoneOn your turn it can only be a Trap, a Quick-Play Spell or a bluff, because other Set Spells can only be activated in their owner's Main Phase.
A purple, white, black or dark blue monsterIt came from the Extra Deck, so the cards used to Summon it are probably in the Graveyard.
A dark blue monsterIt cannot be in Defense Position, and its arrows may open zones for more Extra Deck monsters.
A yellow monsterIt has no effect of its own, but your opponent's other cards may care that it is a Normal Monster.
Orange monsters in your opponent's handSome Effect Monsters, called hand traps, have Quick Effects used straight from the hand, such as Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring.

Color also decides where a card goes when you build. The four Extra Deck colors go in the Extra Deck, up to 15 cards, and everything else counts toward the 40 to 60 card Main Deck. The deck building guide covers the rest of the construction rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do the colors of Yu-Gi-Oh! cards mean?

The frame color is the card type. Yellow is a Normal Monster, orange an Effect Monster, blue a Ritual Monster, purple a Fusion Monster, white a Synchro Monster, black an Xyz Monster and dark blue a Link Monster. Green is a Spell Card and pink a Trap Card. A Pendulum Monster is two-tone: its monster color on top and Spell green on the bottom.

Which Yu-Gi-Oh! card colors go in the Extra Deck?

Purple Fusion, white Synchro, black Xyz and dark blue Link Monsters start the duel in your Extra Deck, which holds up to 15 cards. Every other color, including the blue Ritual Monsters, goes in your Main Deck. A Pendulum Monster whose top half is purple, white or black is an Extra Deck card too.

What is the difference between a yellow and an orange Yu-Gi-Oh! card?

A yellow card is a Normal Monster, with no effect and a line of flavor text in its text box. An orange card is an Effect Monster, whose text box is rules you follow. Many card effects mention Normal Monsters specifically, so the difference matters in play.

What color is a Trap Card in Yu-Gi-Oh!?

Pink, sometimes described as magenta or purple-pink. Spell Cards are green. Both say SPELL or TRAP in the corner where a monster shows its Attribute.

Is the Attribute a card's color?

No. The Attribute is the symbol in a monster's top right corner: DARK, EARTH, FIRE, LIGHT, WATER, WIND or DIVINE. It is a property card effects can check, separate from the frame color. A DARK monster can have any frame color a monster can have.

What color are the Egyptian God cards?

Their frames are orange, because they are Effect Monsters. What sets them apart is their Attribute, DIVINE, which only a handful of monsters have.
