Riftbound Radiance Rules Update

Riot's Radiance rules update took effect on October 16, 2026, with the Pre-Rift. It adds three keywords, a new word for choices that aren't targets, and about thirty tournament rule fixes. Here is what changes at your table, as of October 11, 2026.

Five banned Riftbound cards fanned out: Called Shot, Fight or Flight, Draven, Vanquisher in front, Ekko, Recurrent and Stacked Deck.

October 16, 2026, with the Pre-Rift

Riot posted the core rules patch notes and the tournament rules changelog on October 9, 2026. Both took effect on October 16, the first day of the Radiance Pre-Rift, so the prerelease was the first event played under them. Radiance went on sale October 23.

Three new keywords

KeywordOnWhat it does
DeployGearYou can play the gear to any battlefield: yours, an opponent's or an uncontrolled one. It stays there unless it's destroyed or an effect such as Command: Attack moves it, and it's killed if an opponent holds that battlefield.
DisarmUnitsAn attack trigger. The first time the unit attacks each combat, an enemy unit at its battlefield gets -1 Might this turn. Disarm 2 gives -2, and several Disarm instances add up into one trigger.
Show OffUnits and spellsYou reveal a card from your hand that matches the requirement, or pick a friendly card or token on the board that does. What the effect reads from it is locked in when you show it off.

Deploy is the one that changes how you think about the board. Riot describes it as gear that applies "localized, battlefield-altering effects," and because an opponent holding the battlefield kills it, where you deploy is a bet on which battlefields you can keep.

"Pick" versus "choose"

Riftbound now has two words for making a choice. When a card says "choose," you are targeting what you choose. "Pick," in Riot's words, "is the word we're moving towards for when you make a choice that isn't a target." The difference matters for anything that cares about targeting, such as an effect that triggers when a unit is targeted.

Some Radiance cards already say "pick," and Riot says the change continues with Legacy in January. Older cards keep their printed wording until then.

Other rules changes you might notice

Most of the patch notes are precise wording for judges, but a few change what happens on the table.

Empower more than once. A card can now have permission to be Empowered several times, ignoring "Play only if not Empowered." Kayle, Justified is the card that needed it: she can be Empowered up to three times and gets +2 Might each time. Activating Empower when you are already at the maximum does nothing, which Riot says is intentional.

Copies get their own layer. Copy effects are now calculated first, before anything that changes traits, abilities or numbers. A copy takes the copyable traits of what it copies, which can include another copy effect but not later changes, so a tag another card added, such as the Mech tag from Experimental Hexplate, doesn't come along.

Making new choices. When an effect lets you make new decisions, you make all of them again. You can choose the same options, but you can't keep some old choices and change others, and an ability that triggers on being targeted triggers again even if you choose the same target.

Deckbuilding choices and restrictions. Neeko, Blending In is the first card that asks you to decide something while building your deck: up to three extra legends. Riot also defines a "restriction," the kind of line Perched Grimwyrm has: "Play me only to a battlefield you conquered this turn."

Tournament rule changes

Riot says the changelog "mostly involves cleaning up small mistakes and adding clarity for judges." These are the changes a player at a Pre-Rift or a Regional is most likely to run into:

ChangeWhat it means for you
Radiance joins StandardRadiance cards are legal in Standard from October 16.
Sideboarding notesYou can look at your own notes while sideboarding and after battlefields are revealed, but you have to stop once opening hands are drawn.
LoopsA loop has to be fully deterministic, with nothing random in it.
TokensTokens have to be represented by card objects with a clear ready state that your opponent can understand.
BluffingYou may bluff about your private information.
Floor judgesA floor judge who sees an error has to correct it, even if no player calls a judge.

What didn't change

Neither post touches the ban list or nerfs a card. Riot is explicit: "we do not update the rules of Riftbound or introduce card errata to manage the power level of any card or effect." The bans in place since September 18 still stand. The current Riftbound ban list →

Riot also says Legacy will completely reformat the rules documents to make them easier to read, without changing how the mechanics work. Expect the rule numbers to move in January.

Frequently Asked Questions

When did the Riftbound Radiance rules update take effect?

On October 16, 2026, the first day of the Radiance Pre-Rift. Riot published the core rules patch notes and the tournament rules changelog on October 9, 2026.

What are the new keywords in Riftbound Radiance?

Deploy, Disarm and Show Off. Deploy gear can be played to any battlefield and stays there unless an effect moves it, but is killed if an opponent holds that battlefield. Disarm is an attack trigger that gives an enemy unit at the battlefield -1 Might for the turn, or more with a higher Disarm number. Show Off reveals a matching card from your hand, or picks a matching friendly card or token on the board.

What is the difference between pick and choose in Riftbound?

"Choose" means you are targeting what you choose. "Pick" is the word Riot is moving to for a choice that isn't a target. Some Radiance cards already use "pick", and Riot says more will follow with Legacy.

Did the Radiance rules update ban or change any cards for power?

No. Neither post changes the ban list, and Riot says it does not update the rules or issue errata to manage a card's power level. The current ban list is on our banned Riftbound cards page.

Is Radiance legal in Standard?

Yes. The October 2026 tournament rules changelog adds Radiance to the Standard sets, effective October 16, 2026.
