Riftbound

What Is Riftbound?

Riftbound is the trading card game Riot Games made from League of Legends. Each player leads with a champion, sends units to battlefields and scores points by taking and holding them. Here's what it is, how it plays and where to start.

Five Origins cards fanned out, the kinds a Riftbound deck is made of: Jinx, Demolitionist, Defy, the Legend Ahri, Nine-Tailed Fox in front, Zhonya's Hourglass and Ahri, Alluring.

The short answer

Riftbound, full name Riftbound: League of Legends Trading Card Game, is a physical card game published by Riot Games, the company behind League of Legends. It released in English on October 31, 2025, after launching in China earlier that year. Two to four players each build a deck around one League champion, and the first player to 8 points wins a 1v1 game.

Points come from battlefields. Each player brings battlefields to the game, and you score by moving units to one and winning control of it (conquering) or by still controlling it at the start of your turn (holding). That makes Riftbound a game about where your units are, not just how big they are.

It is a trading card game in the full sense: you buy sealed booster packs, open cards at different rarities and build decks from what you own or trade for. As of October 2, 2026, Riot's card gallery lists four booster sets and a starter box, with 95 League champions printed as champion units. How Riftbound uses League of Legends →

What you bring to a game

A Riftbound deck is more than one stack of cards. Each player brings five things, and only the main deck is shuffled and drawn from.

PartWhat it is
Champion LegendOne card that leads your deck. It names a champion and sets your two domains.
Chosen ChampionA champion unit matching your Legend. It starts the game set aside, ready to play.
Main deckAt least 40 cards, counting your Chosen Champion: units, spells and gear.
Rune deckExactly 12 runes. They pay for your cards and never go in your main deck.
Battlefields3, each with a different name. Where units fight and points are scored.

How a game works

Each turn you channel 2 runes from your rune deck onto the board, draw a card, and spend runes to play cards. Exhausting a rune gives 1 Energy, the generic cost in a card's corner. Recycling a rune to the bottom of the rune deck gives 1 Power of its domain, the colored cost some cards also ask for.

Units are played to your base or to a battlefield you control, and move between them. When units from two players are at the same battlefield, they fight, and the player left in control conquers it for a point. Holding a battlefield you already control at the start of your turn scores again. The first player to 8 points wins a 1v1 or free-for-all game; 2v2 teams play to 11.

Because runes have their own deck, you never draw a rune when you needed a spell, or a spell when you needed a rune. That is the rule most players coming from Magic: The Gathering notice first. The full rules for a first game →

The six domains

Almost every card belongs to a domain, Riftbound's version of a color; battlefields and tokens are the exceptions. There are six: Fury, Calm, Mind, Body, Chaos and Order. Your Legend names two, and your deck can only play cards from those two.

Six domains make 15 possible pairs, and since Vendetta every pair has at least one Legend. Each set's Legends cover a different spread of pairs, which is why a new set can open up a deck style that didn't exist before.

Collecting Riftbound

Main-set cards come in four rarities: Common, Uncommon, Rare and Epic. Above them are printings outside the main set, many of them Showcase rarity in Riot's data: alternate arts, numbered with a letter (030a), overnumbered cards, numbered past the set's total (301/298), and signature printings, marked with an asterisk (301*/298).

Those extra printings hold most of the money. On October 2, 2026, the signature printing of Origins' Ahri, Nine-Tailed Fox was listed at $3,624.82, while most main-set cards in every set sold for under a dollar. What a card is worth depends on the exact printing and finish, so the collector number matters.

Where to start

To learn with friends, start with Proving Grounds. It has four prebuilt decks, led by Annie, Master Yi, Lux and Garen, for two to four players. To learn on your own, read the rules guide, then pick a Legend whose champion you like and build from there, since every deck starts from one.

To collect, decide what you're after first: a playable deck, a full main set, or the chase printings. Each is a different budget, and a full main set is far cheaper than any one signature Legend.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Riftbound?

Riftbound: League of Legends Trading Card Game is a physical trading card game made by Riot Games. Two to four players each lead a deck with a League of Legends champion and fight over battlefields to score points. The first to 8 points wins a 1v1 game.

When did Riftbound come out?

The English release was October 31, 2025, with Origins, the first set, and Proving Grounds, a starter box. Riftbound launched in China earlier in 2025.

Do you need to play League of Legends to play Riftbound?

No. The card game has its own rules, and nothing in it requires the video game. Knowing League helps you recognize champions, items and places, and some keywords borrow League terms, but every keyword's meaning is printed on the card.

Is Riftbound hard to learn?

It's about as involved as other modern trading card games. Proving Grounds, the starter box, has four ready-made decks for two to four players and is the easiest way to learn with friends.

Is Riftbound like Magic: The Gathering?

Both have a deck you draw from, cards you pay for with resources and creatures (units in Riftbound) that fight. The biggest differences are that Riftbound's resources, its runes, come from a separate 12-card deck rather than your main deck, and that you win by scoring points at battlefields rather than reducing life totals.

How many Riftbound sets are there?

As of October 2026, four booster sets, Origins, Spiritforged, Unleashed and Vendetta, plus the Proving Grounds starter box. Radiance, the fifth booster set, is due October 23, 2026.
