Riftbound: The League of Legends Card Game

Riftbound is Riot's trading card game set in the world of League of Legends. Champions lead the decks, the regions of Runeterra are card tags, League's items are gear and its jungle monsters are units. Here's where the video game shows up on the cards.

Riftbound cards drawn from League of Legends fanned out: Jinx, Loose Cannon, Zhonya's Hourglass, Baron Nashor in front, B.F. Sword and Scuttle Crab.

The short answer

Riftbound: League of Legends Trading Card Game is Riot Games' physical card game based on League of Legends. It released in English on October 31, 2025. It is not a card version of a League match: there are no lanes or towers, and you win by scoring points at battlefields. What it takes from League is the cast, the world and much of the vocabulary.

It is also not Legends of Runeterra, Riot's earlier digital card game set in the same world. The two have different rules, and Riftbound cards are cardboard you buy in packs. What Riftbound is and how it plays →

Champions lead every deck

Every Riftbound deck is led by a Champion Legend, a card that names one League champion and sets the deck's two domains. Across the sets released by October 2, 2026, 48 champions have a Legend, and 95 have at least one champion unit, the in-deck version of a champion that can fight on the board.

Most champions with a Legend have several champion units, each a different take on them. Jinx's Legend is Loose Cannon, and her units include Demolitionist and Rebel; a deck led by Jinx picks one of those matching units as its Chosen Champion, which starts the game set aside, ready to play.

The regions of Runeterra

League's regions appear as tags on the cards, printed beside the card type. A tag doesn't change what domain a card is, but other cards can refer to it. Ionia is the most common region in the released sets, and Ixtal the rarest.

Counts are main-set cards across Origins, Proving Grounds, Spiritforged, Unleashed and Vendetta, from Riot's card gallery on October 2, 2026. Sets lean on different regions: Vendetta's Legends include Shurima's Nasus and Renekton, which is why Shurima has as many cards as it does.

League's items are gear

Many of League's items are gear cards. Spiritforged added most of them as Equipment, gear you attach to a unit by paying its Equip cost, and they give the unit Might the way an item gives a champion stats. Long Sword, B.F. Sword, Trinity Force, Warmog's Armor, Blade of the Ruined King and all three Doran's items are Equipment.

Zhonya's Hourglass is gear from Origins, and its effect follows the item: the next time a friendly unit would die, the Hourglass is killed instead and the unit is recalled to base. It is also one of the most played cards in competitive decks.

Baron Nashor and the jungle

Unleashed brought League's jungle monsters into the game as units. Baron Nashor costs 10 Energy, has 12 Might and gives your other units +2 Might, and playing him adds a Baron Pit battlefield token to the board, which units can move to from anywhere. Its overnumbered printing was the most valuable Unleashed card on October 2, 2026, at $1,828.46.

The rest of the jungle is there too. Red Brambleback makes your conquer effects at its battlefield trigger an extra time, Blue Sentinel does the same for hold effects, Scuttle Crab draws a card and has 0 Might but can still conquer and hold, and Elder Dragon and Rift Herald are big Epic units.

League terms on the cards

Several keywords and rules terms borrow League's vocabulary. A keyword's reminder text is printed on the card, so you don't need to know the video game to read them.

TermWhat it does in Riftbound
GankingThe unit can move from battlefield to battlefield, not just between a battlefield and base.
HuntWhen the unit conquers or holds, you gain XP. Hunt 2 gains 2.
LevelAn effect that turns on while you have enough XP, like Level 6.
VisionWhen you play the unit, look at the top card of your deck and you may recycle it.
RecallNot a keyword but a rules term: send a unit to its base. It isn't a move, so effects that trigger on moving don't.

Hunt, Level and XP arrived together in Unleashed. Ganking and Vision have been in the game since Origins. How to read a Riftbound card →

If you play League and want to try Riftbound

Start from a champion you like. If they have a Legend, that's your deck; the Legend tells you its two domains, and every card in the deck comes from those. If you'd rather not build yet, Proving Grounds has four ready-made decks led by Annie, Master Yi, Lux and Garen.

Expect the champions to play like their kits in spirit rather than in detail. Master Yi's Legend from Unleashed gets stronger as you gain XP, and Kennen's Legend, Heart of the Tempest, empowers itself when you play a card from somewhere other than your hand, but a card's text is what decides how it plays, not how the champion works in League. Frequently Asked Questions

Is Riftbound the official League of Legends card game?

Yes. Its full name is Riftbound: League of Legends Trading Card Game, and it is made by Riot Games, the developer of League of Legends. It is a physical card game, released in English on October 31, 2025.

Is Riftbound the same as Legends of Runeterra?

No. Legends of Runeterra is Riot's digital card game, also set in League's world. Riftbound is a separate game with its own rules, played with physical cards.

How many League champions are in Riftbound?

As of October 2, 2026, 95 champions have at least one champion unit in the released sets, and 48 of them have a Legend, the card that leads a deck. Each new set adds more.

Can I play my favorite League champion in Riftbound?

If that champion has a Legend, you can build a deck around them. If they only have champion units so far, you can still play those units in any deck whose domains match, but not as the Legend leading it.

Do I need to know League of Legends to play Riftbound?

No. Every keyword's meaning is printed on the card in reminder text, and the rules don't assume you've played League. Knowing League mostly helps you recognize the names.
