Pokémon TCG · 2000 Set Guide
A reprint set: 130 cards from Base Set and Jungle in one set, printed only in Unlimited, with its own set symbol.
Base Set 2 came out on February 24, 2000, and collected Base Set and Jungle into one 130-card set. Every card but one has the name of a Base Set or Jungle card: 93 from Base Set and 36 from Jungle. The one new name is a spelling, Imposter Professor Oak, where Base Set printed Impostor.
The catalog prices one printing of each card, Normal or Holofoil, with no 1st Edition or Shadowless copies, so a Base Set 2 card costs a fraction of its Base Set original.
Base Set 2 has 130 cards. Every card shows its number over the printed total along the bottom, as in "4/130". The cards print a set symbol, not a set code; the code here is the short one the catalog and TurnZero HQ file the set under.
The printed total is 130 and nothing is numbered above it. The 20 Rare Holo Pokémon combine Base Set's and Jungle's holos. The six cards without a rarity are basic Energy. Set completion in TurnZero HQ counts a set against its printed total and keeps the secret rares apart, so finishing the main set and chasing the cards above it read as two separate goals. Base Set's best-known Trainers are here too:
Base Set 2's chase card is Charizard, 4/130, illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita, at $414.78 on October 22, 2026.
That is less than half the price of an Unlimited Base Set Charizard ($954.65), for the same art and attacks. Blastoise ($155.00) and Mewtwo ($129.37) follow it.
Charizard is printed once in Base Set 2. The number out of 130 and the set symbol tell it apart from Base Set's 4/102, which has no symbol.
Only the exact version is worth its price. The number at the bottom of the card and the rarity symbol beside it tell you which one you pulled. Reading the number and rarity symbol →
The top six are all holos from Base Set's original list.

These are each card's headline TCGplayer market price on October 22, 2026. Prices can move a long way, most of all in a set's first months, so treat them as a snapshot. Each card's page shows today's price for every variant and its 90-day chart. How Pokémon card prices work →
One copy of every card in Base Set 2, bought as singles, cost $1,659.13 on October 22, 2026. That is the fourth most expensive of the six sets in the Base series.
The three most valuable cards, Charizard, Blastoise and Mewtwo, come to $699.15, or 42% of the total. Without them the set costs $959.98. Of the 130 cards, 78 were under $2.00, together $70.67; the other 52 add up to $1,588.46.
Each card is counted at its cheapest priced variant, usually a Normal copy rather than a Reverse Holofoil, or a stamped promo copy where the catalog prices one lower, at its TCGplayer market price. This is what it costs to buy the set as singles. It is not what opening packs returns, and not what a complete set would sell for, which after fees and the many cards worth cents would be noticeably less.
Base Set 2 is not legal in Standard or Expanded as a set: Expanded starts with the Black & White series in 2011. The catalog marks 16 of its 130 cards as legal anyway, ten of them in Standard too.
They are the six basic Energy, which are always legal; Energy Retrieval, Poké Ball, Potion and Switch, legal in both formats; and Caterpie, Double Colorless Energy, Maintenance, PlusPower, Pokédex and Weedle, legal in Expanded only.
Each card other than basic Energy shares its name and text with a later, legal printing, which is what makes an older copy playable. Every other card in the set is legal in neither format.
