Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG

Dark Magician Cards

Dark Magician is Yugi Muto's signature monster and one of the most reprinted cards in Yu-Gi-Oh!. This guide covers the card, the Dark Magician family around it, how to tell the printings apart, and what each one sells for.

Five Dark Magician cards fanned out: Dark Magician Girl, Dark Magician of Chaos, Dark Magician in front, Dark Magician, the Pharaoh's Servant and Dark Paladin.

The card

Dark Magician is a Level 7 DARK Spellcaster Normal Monster with 2500 ATK and 2100 DEF. It was in the TCG's first set, Legend of Blue Eyes White Dragon, in 2002, and as a Normal Monster it has flavor text instead of an effect: "The ultimate wizard in terms of attack and defense."

TurnZero HQ's catalog lists 59 printings of it, from the original LOB-005 Ultra Rare to Commons in starter and structure decks. That is why one Dark Magician can sell for over a thousand dollars and another for less than one. Being Level 7, it needs 2 Tributes to Normal Summon, which is why most Dark Magician decks lean on cards that Special Summon it.

The Dark Magician family

TurnZero HQ's catalog tags 53 cards with the Dark Magician archetype, the cards that name it or count as it. These are the ones collectors and players ask about most, described from each one's card text.

Dark Magician Girl is the other half of Yugi's pair. Her effect reads in full: "Gains 300 ATK for every 'Dark Magician' or 'Magician of Black Chaos' in the GY." She has a newer version too, Dark Magician Girl the Magician's Apprentice from Alliance Insight (2025), whose name becomes Dark Magician Girl when it is Special Summoned by its own effect.

Dark Magician, the Pharaoh's Servant is the newest. If it is in your hand, you can reveal a Spell to Special Summon it and then Set a Spell or Trap that mentions Dark Magician from your Deck, and as a Quick Effect you can discard a Spell to destroy all Spells and Traps your opponent controls. You can use only one of those effects per turn. Magnificent Monsters set guide →

Which printing you have

The set code under the artwork tells you the printing, and the edition mark under the artwork on the left tells you whether it is 1st Edition. These are the Dark Magician printings that come up most.

Read the code exactly. The catalog also lists LOB-EN005 and LOB-E003, and SDY-E005, as separate printings of the same two products with their own prices, so LOB-005 and LOB-EN005 are not interchangeable when you look one up. What Dark Magician cards are worth

A Dark Magician card's price depends on the printing far more than the card. The table shows the cheapest priced printing and the highest regular set printing of each, from TCGplayer market prices on October 10, 2026.

CardCheapest priced printingHighest regular printing
Dark Magician$0.42, SD6-EN003 Common, 1st Edition$1,195.00, LOB-005 Ultra Rare, 1st Edition
Dark Magician, the Pharaoh's Servant$3.29, MAMO-EN001 Ultra Rare, 1st Edition$1,193.80, MAMO-EN001 Starlight Rare, 1st Edition
Dark Magician Girl$0.58, YSYR-EN011 Common, Unlimited$630.91, MFC-000 Secret Rare, 1st Edition
Dark Magician of Chaos$1.12, BP02-EN023 Rare, 1st Edition$265.57, IOC-065 Ultra Rare, 1st Edition

The Dark Magicians$0.55, RA04-EN054 Ultra Rare, 1st Edition$66.46, BACH-EN100 Starlight Rare, 1st Edition

Edition matters most on the oldest cards. The Unlimited LOB-005 Dark Magician was $41.52 on the same day, against $1,195.00 for 1st Edition, and SDY-006 was $249.99 in 1st Edition and $32.94 Unlimited. The second most valuable regular Dark Magician is the GFTP-EN128 Ghost Rare from Ghosts From the Past, at $624.07.

On new cards the rarity makes the difference instead. The Pharaoh's Servant's Ultra Rare and Starlight Rare share a set code, MAMO-EN001, and were $3.29 and $1,193.80. It is also printed as a Grand Master Rare, the serial-numbered rarity, which had no market price yet. A new set's prices move a lot in its first months.

The table leaves out promotional printings, such as the Dark Duel Stories DDS-002 Dark Magician, which sell on very few sales. Prices are for ungraded copies, and condition moves them too. How Yu-Gi-Oh! card prices work →

Playing Dark Magician today

Dark Magician is a deck as well as a card. Every card on this page is Unlimited on the TCG Forbidden & Limited List effective September 21, 2026, and Magnificent Monsters gave the deck new support in 2026. How it does at a store depends on what else is being played, so treat it as a deck you play because you like it.

In Genesys, where points replace the banlist, a few older Spellcasters around the deck cost points, so check the list before you build. Yu-Gi-Oh! Genesys and its points list →

Tracking your Dark Magician cards

With 59 printings of one card, the printing and edition are what you need to record. TurnZero HQ's Yu-Gi-Oh! collection keeps each copy's printing, edition, condition and grade, and values it from TCGplayer's market price for that edition, updated daily. The scanner reads the set code, so it can tell an LOB-005 from a reprint, and asks for the rarity when one code was printed at several. How the collection tracker prices cards →

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a Dark Magician card worth?

Most copies are worth under a dollar, because Dark Magician has been reprinted many times. The exception is the original Legend of Blue Eyes White Dragon printing, LOB-005: its 1st Edition Ultra Rare had a TCGplayer market price of $1,195.00 on October 10, 2026, and the Unlimited copy $41.52. Read the set code under the artwork before you look up a price.

What is the most expensive Dark Magician card?

Among regular set printings in TurnZero HQ's catalog, the 1st Edition LOB-005 Dark Magician ($1,195.00) and the Starlight Rare of Dark Magician, the Pharaoh's Servant from Magnificent Monsters ($1,193.80) were the highest on October 10, 2026. Promotional printings such as the Dark Duel Stories DDS-002 can sell for more, on very few sales.

Is Dark Magician banned?

No. Dark Magician, Dark Magician Girl and the rest of the Dark Magician cards on this page are Unlimited on the TCG Forbidden & Limited List effective September 21, 2026, so you can run 3 copies of each.

Is Dark Magician a Normal Monster?

Yes. Dark Magician is a Level 7 DARK Spellcaster Normal Monster with 2500 ATK and 2100 DEF, so its text box holds flavor text rather than an effect. Its support cards and newer versions, such as Dark Magician, the Pharaoh's Servant, carry the effects.

How do I tell which Dark Magician I have?

Read the set code printed under the artwork on the right. LOB-005 is the original 2002 printing, SDY-006 is Starter Deck: Yugi, and a code such as SD6-EN003 is a later reprint. Then check for the 1st Edition mark under the artwork on the left, which changes the price most on the oldest printings.
