Yu-Gi-Oh! Rules Explained

The Yu-Gi-Oh! Damage Step: Every Timing Explained

The Damage Step is where a battle is settled, and Konami splits it into five timings. A face-down monster flips before damage calculation, its FLIP effect waits until after, and a monster destroyed by battle does not reach the Graveyard until the very end. Only a few kinds of card can be activated along the way.

The five timings

The Damage Step is the third of the Battle Phase's four steps, after the Battle Step where the attack is declared. The page on how battle works covers declaring attacks and working out damage. Konami's Damage Step Rules page breaks the step into five timings, each with the card wording that belongs to it:

TimingWhat happensCard wording that belongs here
1. Start of the Damage StepThe turn player declares the move into the Damage Step."at the start of the Damage Step"
2. Before damage calculationA face-down attacked monster is flipped face-up. ATK/DEF changers can be activated. A flip-triggered effect does not activate yet."before damage calculation"
3. Damage calculation"During damage calculation" effects activate and resolve first. Then ATK/DEF are compared, damage is applied, and destruction is decided, but nothing is sent to the GY yet."during damage calculation"
4. After damage calculationEffects that result from the battle activate, including FLIP effects of monsters flipped before damage calculation. Destroyed monsters are still on the field."when this card battles", "when battle damage is inflicted", "after damage calculation", FLIP:
5. End of the Damage StepMonsters destroyed by battle are sent to the GY, then their "destroyed by battle" effects activate. Effects that last "until the end of the Damage Step" end."destroyed by battle (and sent to the GY)", "at the end of the Damage Step"

After the end of the Damage Step, play returns to the Battle Step. If the turn player does not want to attack again, the Battle Phase moves to the End Step.

What you can activate

Konami Official Rulebook, Version 10 · Damage Step Rules, page 41

"During the Damage Step, you can only activate Counter Trap Cards, or cards with effects that directly change a monster's ATK or DEF. Also, these cards can only be activated up until the start of damage calculation."

Forbidden Lance ("that target loses 800 ATK") directly changes ATK, so it can be activated in the Damage Step, up to the start of damage calculation. Book of Moon changes battle position instead, so it cannot. Neither can a card that negates or ends an attack unless it is a Counter Trap. Those are used in the Battle Step, when the attack is declared, which is where Mirror Force's "When an opponent's monster declares an attack" places it. Konami's rulings add a group the rulebook sentence leaves out: an effect that negates the activation of a card or effect can be used in the Damage Step to answer one. Mandatory effects also still activate when they trigger.

Card text can name its own Damage Step timing, and the rulebook says card text takes precedence over the basic rules (page 51). Kuriboh is used "During damage calculation, if your opponent's monster attacks (Quick Effect)", and Cipher Soldier gains 2000 ATK and DEF "during that damage calculation only" when it battles a Warrior monster. Honest, covered on the battle page, is the classic ATK changer used from the hand.

Face-down monsters and FLIP effects

Attacking a face-down Defense Position monster flips it face-up before damage calculation, so its DEF can be used. Its FLIP effect waits. Konami's rulebook gives the rule:

Konami Official Rulebook, Version 10 · Activation of a Flip Effect, page 41

"When an attacked monster is flipped face-up, any Flip effects are activated and resolved after damage calculation. If you need to select a monster for the Flip effect to target, you cannot target a monster that has already been destroyed during damage calculation."

That matters for cards that check whether the monster was face-down at the start of the step. Marshmallon reads "After damage calculation, if this card was attacked, and was face-down at the start of the Damage Step: The attacking player takes 1000 damage." It flips face-up before damage calculation, but it was face-down when the step began, so the damage still happens.

When destroyed monsters leave the field

Damage calculation only decides that a monster is destroyed. Konami's Damage Step Rules say it stays on the field through the timing after damage calculation and is sent to the GY at the end of the Damage Step. Effects that care about the destroyed monster in between see it still on the field.

Dark Magician of Chaos uses that window: "If this card destroys an opponent's monster by battle, after damage calculation: Banish that opponent's monster." Its effect happens before the monster would have reached the GY. Mystic Tomato is the other side: "When this card is destroyed by battle and sent to the GY: You can Special Summon ...". That effect activates at the end of the Damage Step, once Mystic Tomato is in the GY.

The end of the step is also when effects that last "until the end of the Damage Step" stop applying. Ancient Gear Golem reads "If this card attacks, your opponent cannot activate any Spell/Trap Cards until the end of the Damage Step."

What "battled" means

Konami Official Rulebook, Version 10 · Glossary, page 52

"When a card requires a monster to have 'battled' (past tense), the attack had to have reached the damage calculation portion of the Damage Step in order for the monster to have 'battled'. If the attack stops before damage calculation, the monster did not 'battle'."

The rulebook adds that the attack was still declared, so in most cases the attacking monster cannot declare another one. An attack negated in the Battle Step counts as an attack, but not as a battle.

Worked examples

Attacking a face-down Man-Eater Bug

1

Your monster with 1800 ATK attacks your opponent's face-down Defense Position monster. No one responds in the Battle Step, and you move into the Damage Step.

2

Before damage calculation: the monster is flipped face-up. It is Man-Eater Bug (DEF 600). Its FLIP effect does not activate yet.

3

Damage calculation: 1800 ATK beats 600 DEF, so Man-Eater Bug is destroyed. No battle damage, since it was in Defense Position. It stays on the field for now.

4

After damage calculation: Man-Eater Bug's FLIP effect activates. It cannot target itself, since it was destroyed during damage calculation, so your opponent targets your attacking monster and destroys it.

5

End of the Damage Step: Man-Eater Bug is sent to the GY.

Kuriboh and a Forbidden Lance

1

Your opponent's monster attacks your Attack Position monster. In the Damage Step, before damage calculation, your opponent activates Forbidden Lance on your monster, which loses 800 ATK.

2

Your monster is now weaker. During damage calculation, you discard Kuriboh from your hand, so you take no battle damage from this battle.

3

Damage calculation still decides which monsters are destroyed. Kuriboh only stops the battle damage.

Common Damage Step mistakes

✕

Activating Book of Moon or a destruction Trap in the Damage Step. Only Counter Traps, direct ATK/DEF changers and effects that negate an activation are allowed, unless the card names a Damage Step timing.

✕

Resolving a FLIP effect as soon as the attacked monster flips. It waits until after damage calculation.

✕

Sending a destroyed monster to the GY right after damage calculation. It goes at the end of the Damage Step.

✕

Using an ATK changer during damage calculation. The rulebook allows them only up to the start of damage calculation, unless the card says otherwise.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can you activate during the Damage Step?

Konami's rulebook names Counter Trap Cards and cards with effects that directly change a monster's ATK or DEF, the latter only up to the start of damage calculation. Konami's rulings add effects that negate the activation of a card or effect, and mandatory effects still activate when they trigger. Cards whose own text names a Damage Step timing, such as "during damage calculation" or "after damage calculation", can be used at that timing.

Can you activate Book of Moon in the Damage Step?

No. Book of Moon changes a monster's battle position. It does not directly change ATK or DEF, it is not a Counter Trap and it does not negate an activation, so it cannot be activated in the Damage Step. Use it earlier, for example when the attack is declared.

When does a FLIP effect activate if the monster is attacked face-down?

The monster is flipped face-up before damage calculation, but its FLIP effect does not activate until after damage calculation. If the effect targets, it cannot target a monster that was already destroyed during damage calculation.

When is a monster destroyed by battle sent to the Graveyard?

At the end of the Damage Step. Damage calculation decides that the monster is destroyed, but Konami's Damage Step Rules say it is not sent to the Graveyard until the end of the Damage Step. Effects that activate when a monster is destroyed by battle and sent to the Graveyard activate then.

What does "battled" mean in Yu-Gi-Oh!?

Konami's rulebook says a monster has "battled" only if the attack reached damage calculation. If the attack is stopped before then, the monster did not battle, although it still declared an attack.
