Fit the whole card in the frame and keep its bottom edge in view, where the collector number and set are printed. The name and version help too, but the number is what identifies the card.
Each recognized card is added to your collection the moment it is read, so switching apps halfway through a stack loses nothing. Undo on any row takes that copy back off.
If a read could be more than one card, the scanner shows the candidates and waits for you to tap the right one. Nothing is added on a guess.
A Magic scanner looks at the title, because a Magic card's name is its identity. A Lorcana scanner has to look lower. The phone reads the text on the card, and TurnZero HQ works through it in this order:

The scanner keeps reading while the camera is open, so it needs a rule for when a card is new. The rule is simple: a new card is one that reads differently from the last card added. Holding the same card up adds it once, and the scanner tells you it is still in view. For a second copy of the same card, tap +1 on its row. The scanner adds each card as its headline version: Normal, or Foil for a card that is only printed in foil, such as an Enchanted. A camera can't reliably tell a foil from a normal copy, so rather than guess, it leaves that to you. Open the card from your collection and move the copy to the right finish, and its price follows. Everything the camera does from a card's text also works from what you type. Enter the set and the card number from the bottom of the card:

That's how the web app adds cards, since a browser has no scanner camera, and it's often quicker on a phone for a card in a sleeve with glare across the bottom.
Because the name doesn't identify the card. A character like Mickey Mouse is printed as many different cards, each with its own version name, and an Enchanted card shares its name and version with a regular one. A collector line like "205/204 • EN • 1" is printed on exactly one card, so TurnZero HQ reads that first and uses the name and version only to break ties.
Yes. Promos print their own collector line, like "25/P1" for a card from the first promo set, and the scanner matches them the same way. On the web you type the promo set and number, like "P1 25".
No, and it doesn't pretend to. A camera can't reliably see the difference between a foil and a normal copy, so a scanned card is added as its headline version (Normal, or Foil for a card that only comes in foil, like an Enchanted). Change the finish on the card's page afterward if yours is different.
A card that reads the same as the one just added is treated as still being in the frame, so holding a card up doesn't add it over and over. To add a second copy, tap +1 on its row, or scan a different card in between.
The camera scanner is in the iPhone and Android apps. On the web you type what's printed at the bottom of the card instead: the set number and the card number, like "1 205", and the same matching finds it.
Yes. If your cards are in the TCGplayer app or a spreadsheet, import them as a CSV instead. You see every row matched in a preview before anything is added, and scanning is there for the cards that aren't in the file.
No. The text on the card is read on your phone, and only that text is sent to TurnZero HQ to match against the catalog. No picture of the card is uploaded or kept.
