ST-10 The Three Captains

ST-10 is a Red/Purple Ultra Deck with three Leaders: Monkey.D.Luffy, Eustass"Captain"Kid and Trafalgar Law. Law is banned, so the box gives you two Standard Leaders and a shared pool of DON!! cards to build them from.

ST-10 The Three Captains is an Ultra Deck from November 2023 with three Red/Purple Leaders in one box. Monkey.D.Luffy leads the Straw Hat Crew cards, Eustass"Captain"Kid leads the Kid Pirates, and Trafalgar Law leads the Heart Pirates. Bandai has since banned the Law Leader, so only Luffy and Kid can be played as Leaders in Standard or Extra Regulation.

All three Leaders deal in DON!!. Luffy (6000 power, 3 Life) adds 1 active DON!! from your DON!! deck once per turn if you have 0 DON!! on the field or 8 or more. Kid (5000 power, 5 Life) returns 1 DON!! to your DON!! deck when he attacks to gain +2000 power, and he loses 1000 power on your turn while you have 4 or more Life. The box's 17 different cards include ones that add DON!! (Shachi & Penguin, Jean Bart, Bepo, Punk Vise) and ones that pay off when DON!! is returned (Killer, Heat, Wire).

The deck suits a player who already knows the basics and wants to learn DON!! management. It is one box that teaches two different ways to use the DON!! deck, and both Leaders have Standard-legal support across later sets.

The Luffy (ST10-002) and Kid (ST10-003) Leaders are Standard-legal, the Trafalgar Law Leader (ST10-001) is banned, and Roronoa Zoro (OP01-025) is a rotated block 1 card.

Ratings

Strength as sold 3/5

Rated for the Luffy Leader, the strongest legal option in the box. The deck already has DON!! ramp in Shachi & Penguin and Jean Bart and a 10-cost Monkey.D.Luffy to spend it on, but about a third of the box's different cards are Kid Pirates cards that Luffy does not use.

Upgraded ceiling 4/5

Luffy's extra DON!! at 8 or more pairs well with purple Straw Hat Crew cards that check for 8 DON!!, such as Uso-Hachi and San-Gorou, and red removal fills the deck's gaps. Kid's ceiling is lower because his Leader starts at 4000 power on your turn until you drop to 3 Life.

Difficulty to play 4/5

Both Leaders ask you to count DON!! every turn: Luffy wants exactly 0 or 8 or more on the field, and Kid's deck triggers off DON!! returning to the DON!! deck. Spending DON!! −1 at the wrong time costs you a whole turn of tempo.

How it plays

With Luffy, the plan is to reach 8 DON!! as quickly as possible. Shachi & Penguin adds 2 rested DON!! if you have 3 or less on the field, Jean Bart turns 1 rested DON!! into an extra active one, and Bepo adds a DON!! when your opponent has more than you. Once you are at 8, the Leader adds one more active DON!! each turn, so you reach the 10 that the 10-cost Monkey.D.Luffy needs a turn sooner.

The 10-cost Luffy is the finisher. It has Rush, and once per turn when your opponent activates a Blocker, it K.O.s one of their Characters with 8000 power or less. Gum-Gum Kong Gatling, which K.O.s a Character with 7000 power or less, and Jinbe's −2000 when attacking keep the board clear until then.

With Kid, you attack every turn and return a DON!! each time. That return triggers Killer (K.O. a rested Character costing 3 or less), Heat (+2000 until your next turn) and Wire (draw 1, trash 1), each once per turn on your turn. Kid wants to be at 3 Life or fewer so he is not giving up 1000 power, which makes him the more aggressive of the two Leaders.

Tips for your first games

  • Count your DON!! before using Luffy's Leader effect. It checks the number on your field, so a turn where you spent DON!! −1 earlier can leave you at 7 and lose the bonus.
  • Play Shachi & Penguin early with Luffy. It only adds DON!! if you have 3 or less on the field, so it is strongest on your second or third turn.
  • With Kid, play Killer, Heat or Wire before you attack. Their effects watch for DON!! returning, so they need to be on the field when Kid's DON!! −1 happens.
  • Hold the 10-cost Monkey.D.Luffy until your opponent has Blockers on the field. Its K.O. only happens when they activate one, so it is worth the most against a defensive board.
  • Leave the Law Leader out of organized play, since it is banned. The Heart Pirates Characters, like Shachi & Penguin and Jean Bart, do not need Law and still work under Luffy.

Upgrade guide

Every upgrade below is legal in Standard and shares a color with the Leader. Prices are each card's base printing on TCGplayer on October 10, 2026; open a card for today's price.

For Luffy: cards that pay off at 8 DON!!

Luffy's Leader is at its best once you have 8 DON!! on the field, so the first upgrade is purple Straw Hat Crew cards that do more at that point. Uso-Hachi rests a Character, O-Nami draws, and San-Gorou draws each time it attacks. Franky and the Heart Pirates Trafalgar Law add DON!! on the way there when you are behind on DON!!. Most of these are budget cards, and they replace the Kid Pirates cards, which do little in a Luffy deck. The cost is a slower early game: several of these do nothing until turn five or six.

Uso-Hachi ST18-001$3.54
O-Nami ST18-002$0.30
San-Gorou ST18-003$0.20
Franky EB02-037$0.71
Trafalgar Law OP12-073$0.49

For Kid: build the DON!! return engine

Kid returns a DON!! every time he attacks, and the box only has three cards that care. These add more. The 5-cost Kid and the 3-cost Hitokiri Kamazo give the DON!! back so you do not fall behind, Killer stands your Kid Leader for a second attack, and Bepo pumps a Character or Leader whenever DON!! is returned. All of them are budget cards. The cost is that this build only works under Kid; none of these do much for Luffy.

For either Leader: red and purple removal

The box has only two real removal cards, Gum-Gum Kong Gatling and Gum-Gum Giant Sumo Slap. These Straw Hat Crew events have no Leader requirement, so they fit Luffy or Kid. Gum-Gum Lightning costs DON!! −2, which also triggers Kid's return effects. There's No Way You Could Defeat Me!! is a Counter event, so it also helps on defense, and Cloven Rose Blizzard is a budget pick that pumps three of your cards as well.

What to cut first

Bandai's list doesn't say how many copies of each card the deck has, so cut by card: take out every copy of these before anything else, and keep the deck at exactly 50.

Every card in ST-10

Bandai's card list for ST-10 has 19 different cards. 2 of them carry a block 1 icon or are banned, so they can't be played in Standard; they are still legal in Extra Regulation unless banned. Legality follows Bandai's block icons and its banned list effective October 12, 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ST-10 The Three Captains good?

Yes, as a starting point. The Luffy Leader has a clear ramp plan and the box includes its 10-cost finisher, so we rate it 3 out of 5 as sold and 4 with upgrades.

Is ST-10 legal in Standard?

Mostly. The Luffy and Kid Leaders are legal, the Trafalgar Law Leader (ST10-001) is banned, and Roronoa Zoro (OP01-025) has rotated out of Standard.

Which Leader should I play from ST-10?

Start with Luffy if you want a ramp deck with a big finisher, or Kid if you prefer attacking every turn. Law cannot be used as a Leader because it is banned.

Is ST-10 good for beginners?

It is better as a second deck. Both legal Leaders ask you to track your DON!! count every turn, which is easier once you know the basic turn structure.
