ST-14 3D2Y

ST-14 is a mono-black Straw Hat Crew deck where every good effect asks the same question: do you have a Character with a cost of 8 or more? Here is how the deck gets there and which cards help it get there sooner.

ST-14 is the 3D2Y starter, a mono-black Straw Hat Crew deck with a Monkey.D.Luffy Leader. The deck's 17 different cards are almost all Straw Hat Crew Characters and Events, plus three helpers (Jinbe, Haredas and Heracles) whose job is to raise a Straw Hat's cost.

The Leader's effect needs one DON!! attached. With it, all of your Characters gain +1 cost, and if you have a Character with a cost of 8 or more, the Leader gains +1000 power. Cost matters because most of the box's removal and card draw only works with a cost 8 Character on your field: Usopp, Nico Robin, Nami, Haredas, Gum-Gum Giant Rifle and the Phoenix Cannon Event all check for it.

This is a good first black deck. The cards are short and readable, and the one question the deck asks is easy to track once you know where each +cost comes from.

Every card in ST-14 is legal in Standard.

Ratings

Strength as sold 3/5

The plan is clear and the cost math works: Nico Robin or Roronoa Zoro at 6 plus the Leader and Thousand Sunny reach cost 8 and turn on Sanji, Usopp and Nami. Several Characters are vanilla bodies, so the deck runs out of effects when the cost 8 Character is removed.

Upgraded ceiling 3/5

Cheap cost raisers like Duval and Saint Homing, plus payoffs like OP08-085 Jinbe, make the cost 8 check easier to hit and better to hit. The Leader itself only adds +1 cost and +1000 power, so the ceiling stays at a coherent casual deck.

Difficulty to play 2/5

Most turns come down to attaching a DON!! to the Leader first, then counting each Character's cost before you play the card that checks for cost 8. The Characters are simple, and there is no Life or trash bookkeeping.

How it plays

The deck wins by getting a cost 8 Character onto the field in the middle turns and then using every effect that checks for it. The usual route is a 6-cost Nico Robin or Roronoa Zoro: with a DON!! on the Leader and Thousand Sunny in play, each one counts as cost 8. Jinbe, Heracles and Haredas can add +2 more to a black Straw Hat Crew Character until the end of your opponent's next turn.

Once you have cost 8, Usopp K.O.s a cost 4 or less Character when it attacks with a DON!!, Nico Robin gives an opponent's Character -5 cost, and the Phoenix Cannon Event (Gum-Gum Diable Three-Swords Style Mouten Jet Six Hundred Pound Phoenix Cannon) K.O.s a cost 2 or less Character. Robin's -5 cost sets up those K.O. effects on bigger targets. Sanji only asks for cost 6 or more, so he works one step earlier.

The top end is the 8-cost Monkey.D.Luffy, a 10000-power Character that gains Rush if you have a Character with a cost of 10 or more. With a DON!! on the Leader and Thousand Sunny out, Luffy reaches cost 10 by himself, so he can attack the turn he lands.

Tips for your first games

  • Attach a DON!! to the Leader before you play anything that checks cost, because the Leader's +1 only applies while that DON!! is attached.
  • Play Thousand Sunny early; it draws a card when it enters and gives every black Straw Hat Crew Character +1 cost for the rest of the game.
  • The +2 cost from Heracles and Jinbe lasts until the end of your opponent's next turn, so it also keeps your Character out of range of removal that only hits low costs.
  • Play Nico Robin before Usopp attacks so her -5 cost can bring a bigger Character into Usopp's cost 4 or less range.
  • The 8-cost Luffy counts as cost 10 only while the Leader has a DON!! attached and Thousand Sunny is in play (or a +2 from Jinbe or Heracles is on him), so check both before you count on Rush.

Upgrade guide

Every upgrade below is legal in Standard and shares a color with the Leader. Prices are each card's base printing on TCGplayer on October 10, 2026; open a card for today's price.

Budget: reach cost 8 sooner

The deck's weak turns are the ones where nothing on your field is cost 8, so its removal and draw sit idle. These cheap cards add more ways to raise costs and more Characters that land close to 8. They replace the vanilla Brook and Chopper and keep the deck's price low.

CardNumberPrice, October 10, 2026
Duval OP08-088$0.56
Saint Homing OP10-093$0.46
Monkey.D.Luffy P-075$0.34
Ursa Shock OP12-096$0.78
Brook EB01-046$0.85

More payoffs for the cost 8 check

Once the deck reaches cost 8 reliably, it wants more cards that do something big when it does. These are stronger Straw Hat Crew Characters and a black Blocker that each use the cost theme. They cost more than the budget list, and Jinbe in particular is the most expensive card in this guide, so start with Sanji and Nami.

CardNumberPrice, October 10, 2026
Jinbe OP08-085$8.73
Sanji OP16-086$3.65
Nami OP15-086$2.73
Sabo OP13-120$3.73
