ST-15 Red Edward.Newgate

ST-15 is a red Whitebeard Pirates deck built around the original Edward.Newgate Leader, which trades your own Life for cards every turn. That Leader rotated out of Standard, so this guide covers casual and Extra Regulation play and the Standard path through the newer Newgate Leader.

Overview

Release date October 25, 2024
Colors Red
Leader Edward.Newgate
Different cards 15, plus 10 DON!!
Standard Rotated out of Standard

ST-15 is a mono-red Whitebeard Pirates deck with the OP02-001 Edward.Newgate Leader. The Leader has 6000 power and 6 Life, and at the end of each of your turns it adds the top card of your Life to your hand. You start with more Life than most Leaders and spend it as card draw.

The box reprints ten cards from OP02 and OP03 and adds five new ST15 cards. All ten reprints, the Leader included, are block 1 cards that left Standard on April 1, 2026. The five ST15 cards (Atmos, Edward.Newgate, Kingdew, Thatch and Portgas.D.Ace) are still legal, so the box is still useful as a source of Whitebeard Pirates Characters.

As sold, ST-15 is a deck for kitchen-table games and Bandai's Extra Regulation, where every card is legal except the ban list. If you want to play Standard, the closest successor is the OP17-001 Edward.Newgate Leader, a red Four Emperors/Whitebeard Pirates Leader that can trash a card from your hand to give +4000 power during your opponent's attack.

The Edward.Newgate Leader (OP02-001) and nine other cards (OP02-008, OP02-018, OP02-019, OP02-023, OP03-003, OP03-006, OP03-007, OP03-009 and OP03-010) are block 1 cards that left Standard on April 1, 2026; only the five ST15 cards are still Standard-legal.

Ratings

Strength as sold 1/5

The OP02-001 Edward.Newgate Leader is rotated, so the deck cannot be played in Standard as sold. In casual or Extra Regulation games it is a straightforward red beatdown deck with a 6000-power, 6-Life Leader.

Upgraded ceiling 3/5

This rates the Standard path: move to the OP17-001 Edward.Newgate Leader and rebuild around Whitebeard Pirates cards from OP16, OP17 and ST30. That Leader's +4000 on defense and a deep pool of 8000-power Characters make a coherent deck, but most of the box's own cards do not carry over.

Difficulty to play 3/5

The Leader drains your own Life every turn, so you have to decide when to stop it with Atmos or You May Be a Fool...but I Still Love You. Marco's revive and Jozu's Rush both turn on at 2 or less Life, so you are always reading your Life total.

These are TurnZero HQ's own read of the cards, not tournament results or an official Bandai rating. How we rate starter decks →

How it plays

The deck attacks early with efficient red bodies and uses the Leader's extra cards to keep attacking. Izo searches for a Whitebeard Pirates card, Namule and Speed Jil are plain 5000 and 6000 bodies at 3 and 4 cost, and Rakuyo gives your Whitebeard Pirates Characters +1000 power on your turn with a DON!! attached.

Because the Leader takes a Life card into your hand every turn, you reach low Life quickly, and several cards reward that. Jozu gains Rush at 2 or less Life, Marco comes back from the trash rested at 2 or less Life if you trash a Whitebeard Pirates card from hand, and the SR Portgas.D.Ace has Rush any time your Leader is a Whitebeard Pirates Leader.

When your Life gets too low to keep drawing, Atmos (when it attacks) and You May Be a Fool...but I Still Love You stop you from adding Life cards to your hand that turn, which turns off the Leader's drain. The SR Edward.Newgate closes games: it gives a rested DON!! on play and can rest itself to K.O. a Character with 5000 power or less.

Tips for your first games

  • Play Atmos or You May Be a Fool...but I Still Love You on the turn your Life reaches 2, before your Leader's end-of-turn effect takes the next card.
  • Thatch's -2000 power can bring a 7000-power Character into range of the SR Edward.Newgate's 5000-or-less K.O., but Thatch also takes a Life card, so count first.
  • Keep a Whitebeard Pirates card in hand once you are at 2 or less Life so Marco can come back after it is K.O.'d.
  • In Standard, the five ST15 cards still work under the OP17-001 Leader, and Portgas.D.Ace and Kingdew are the ones worth keeping.

Upgrade guide

Every upgrade below is legal in Standard and shares a color with the Leader. Prices are each card's base printing on TCGplayer on October 10, 2026; open a card for today's price.

Budget: a Standard Whitebeard Pirates core for the OP17-001 Leader

To play Standard, you need the OP17-001 Edward.Newgate Leader and Standard-legal replacements for the ten rotated cards. These budget cards cover the search, the mid-cost bodies and the Leader support. Three of them (Jozu, Izo and Kouzuki Oden) name an [Edward.Newgate] Leader, and Jozu's effect also works with the old OP02-001 Leader in casual games.

OP17-001 Leader: the 8000-power package

Many OP16 Whitebeard Pirates cards check for a Character card with 8000 power in your hand or on your field. Running enough 8000-power Characters turns on draw, removal and a big Leader attack from OP16-003 Edward.Newgate. The cost is a heavier curve, so you lean on the OP17-001 Leader's +4000 to survive the early turns.

OP17-001 Leader: removal suite

The box's only real removal is the SR Edward.Newgate. These OP17 cards add K.O. effects for small Characters and power cuts that set up bigger K.O.s. Haruta, Rakuyo and Portgas.D.Ace cost more than the rest of this guide, so add Blamenco first.

Haruta OP17-009$3.93
Rakuyo OP17-016$5.73

What to cut first

Bandai's list doesn't say how many copies of each card the deck has, so cut by card: take out every copy of these before anything else, and keep the deck at exactly 50.

Every card in ST-15

Bandai's card list for ST-15 has 15 different cards. 10 of them carry a block 1 icon or are banned, so they can't be played in Standard; they are still legal in Extra Regulation unless banned. Legality follows Bandai's block icons and its banned list effective October 12, 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ST-15 legal in Standard?

No. The OP02-001 Edward.Newgate Leader and nine other cards in the box left Standard on April 1, 2026. Only the five ST15 cards are still Standard-legal.

Is ST-15 good?

In casual games and Extra Regulation it is a simple, aggressive red deck with a 6-Life Leader. In Standard it cannot be played as sold.

Is there a Standard version of the ST-15 Newgate Leader?

Yes. OP17-001 Edward.Newgate is a red Four Emperors/Whitebeard Pirates Leader that is legal in Standard, and the ST15 Edward.Newgate, Portgas.D.Ace and Kingdew all work under it.

What should I upgrade first in ST-15?

If you want to play Standard, start with the OP17-001 Leader and the budget Whitebeard Pirates core in this guide. For casual play, cut Fossa and Haruta first.
