ST-22 Ace & Newgate is a mono-blue starter built on the Whitebeard Pirates. Its Leader, ST22-001, has 5000 power and 5 Life. Once per turn in your Main Phase, you may reveal a card with a type including "Whitebeard Pirates" from your hand, draw 1 card, and place the revealed card on top of your deck.

That ability does not gain you a card, but it tells you exactly what is on top of your deck. Many cards in the box reveal the top card and reward you if its type includes "Whitebeard Pirates": Edward.Newgate and Jozu draw 2, Squard moves a DON!!, Marco gains power, and Take That Back!! Take Back What You Said!! becomes a +4000 counter. The Allies, such as Elmy and A.O., also count, because their type includes "Whitebeard Pirates".

The box has 17 different cards. It suits a player who likes planning a turn ahead and wants a deck where the Leader sets up the rest of the cards.

Every card in ST-22 is legal in Standard, including the ST22-001 Ace & Newgate Leader.

Ratings

Strength as sold 3/5

The Leader guarantees that Edward.Newgate, Jozu, Marco and Take That Back!! Take Back What You Said!! hit their top-card reveals, which is a real engine, but the box has only one removal event and several vanilla Allies.

Upgraded ceiling 4/5

Adding cards that play or draw off the top card, like Portgas.D.Ace (OP08-052) and I Will Make Whitebeard the King of the Pirates, plus blue bounce and bottom-deck removal, gives the Leader a payoff every turn.

Difficulty to play 3/5

You have to decide each turn which Whitebeard Pirates card to put on top and when to reveal, and Kouzuki Oden and I Am Whitebeard!! ask you to manage your hand and Life.

How it plays

The deck wins with large Whitebeard Pirates Characters backed by card draw. In the early turns, play Izo to find another Whitebeard Pirates card, and use the Leader ability to swap a card you do not need yet for a fresh draw while setting up the top of your deck.

In the middle turns, use the Leader before a reveal effect so it always hits. Jozu at 7 cost then draws 2 cards, Marco gains +1000 until the end of your opponent's next turn when he attacks, and Squard gives a rested DON!! to an attacker. Fire Fist, after revealing 2 Whitebeard Pirates cards, draws 1 and puts a Character with a cost of 5 or less on the bottom of its owner's deck.

Late, Edward.Newgate is a 10000-power [Double Attack] Character. I Am Whitebeard!! plays him from your hand for 8 DON!!, and if you then add a Life card to your hand, gives your Leader +2000 until the end of your opponent's next turn. Kouzuki Oden stays on the field by trashing 2 cards from your hand when your opponent's effect would remove him.

Tips for your first games

  • Use the Leader ability before Jozu, Edward.Newgate, Squard or a Marco attack so the top card is a known Whitebeard Pirates card.
  • Hold Take That Back!! Take Back What You Said!! until the top card is set; with a Whitebeard Pirates card on top it is +4000 for 1 DON!!.
  • Izo can be trashed on your opponent's attack to draw 1 card and put a card from your hand on the bottom, which fixes a hand with no counters.
  • Keep enough cards in hand to pay for Kouzuki Oden's protection, which trashes 2 cards instead of losing him.
  • Count Whitebeard Pirates cards before casting Fire Fist or Whitey Bay, since both need you to reveal 2 from your hand.

Upgrade guide

Every upgrade below is legal in Standard and shares a color with the Leader. Prices are each card's base printing on TCGplayer on October 10, 2026; open a card for today's price.

Payoffs for the card on top

This is the budget upgrade and the one that matters most. Each of these cards looks at or plays from the top of your deck, which the Leader controls. Portgas.D.Ace (OP08-052) plays a Whitebeard Pirates Character costing 4 or less from the top, the 3-cost counter event does the same for a 3-cost or less Character, and I Will Make Whitebeard the King of the Pirates plays a Whitebeard Pirates Character costing 9 or less from the top with [Rush]. With the Leader you can put Edward.Newgate there first. These replace Vista, Decalvan Brothers and Elmy, so the deck gives up some cheap counters for card advantage.

Bounce, bottom-deck removal and blockers

ST-22 has one removal card, Fire Fist, and only Vista as a [Blocker]. These fix that with blue's usual tools: returning Characters to hand or placing them on the bottom of the deck. Atmos and Phoenix Brand use the same reveal-2-Whitebeard-Pirates cost the box already asks for, and Marco (OP10-055) and Vista (OP14-053) are cheap [Blocker]s. Atmos is the priciest card here; the rest are inexpensive. They replace LittleOars Jr. and Whitey Bay.

Atmos OP08-040$7.10
Phoenix Brand OP08-055$0.59

More card flow for the reveal costs

Fire Fist, Whitey Bay and the Atmos and Phoenix Brand upgrades all ask you to reveal 2 Whitebeard Pirates cards, so the deck wants a full hand. These cards draw or search and keep the hand stocked. Namule and Izo (OP09-044) also let you place cards on top or pick a card, which fits the Leader's top-deck plan. Izo (OP13-041) is the cheapest, and the 10-cost Edward.Newgate (OP13-042) is a [Blocker] that draws and hands out DON!!.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ST-22 good?

ST-22 is a coherent deck as sold, because its Leader makes the box's many top-card reveals reliable. It needs more removal and blockers, which inexpensive blue Whitebeard Pirates cards provide.

Is ST-22 legal in Standard?

Yes. Every card in ST-22, including the Ace & Newgate Leader, is legal in Standard.

What should I upgrade first in ST-22?

Replace the vanilla Allies and the 1000-power Vista with cards that use the top of your deck, such as Portgas.D.Ace (OP08-052) and I Will Make Whitebeard the King of the Pirates.

Is ST-22 good for beginners?

It is a reasonable second deck. The Characters are simple, but getting value from the Leader means thinking about which card sits on top of your deck before each reveal.
