ST-01 Straw Hat Crew

The first red Luffy deck is a clean lesson in giving DON!! cards, but its Leader rotated out of Standard in April 2026. Here is how it plays, where it still fits, and which red cards to add.

Overview

Release date December 2, 2022
Colors Red
Leader Monkey.D.Luffy
Different cards 17, plus 10 DON!!
Standard Rotated out of Standard

ST-01 Straw Hat Crew is a mono-red deck built around Monkey.D.Luffy and his crew. The Leader, ST01-001, has 5000 power and 5 Life, and once per turn during your Main Phase it can give up to 1 rested DON!! card to itself or one of your Characters. That small push of power is the whole engine: it lets a 5000-power Character attack into a 6000-power Leader without spending extra DON!! from your cost area.

The deck's 17 different cards are almost all {Straw Hat Crew} type Characters with plain stats. Nami copies the Leader's DON!! giving, Brook gives 2 rested DON!! when played, Sanji gains [Rush] with 2 DON!! attached, and the 5-cost Monkey.D.Luffy has [Rush] and stops your opponent from using [Blocker] when it attacks with 2 DON!!. Gum-Gum Jet Pistol and Diable Jambe are the deck's only answers to opposing Characters.

The Leader and every card except ST01-011 Brook rotated out of Standard on April 1, 2026. That makes ST-01 a deck for casual games, for teaching a new player how DON!! cards work, and for Bandai's Extra Regulation format, where every card is legal except the ban list. If you want a Standard red Luffy, ST21-001 Monkey.D.Luffy is the direct successor: the same character, the same color and a stronger version of the same DON!! giving effect.

The Leader, ST01-001 Monkey.D.Luffy, and every card in the box except ST01-011 Brook are block 1 cards that left Standard on April 1, 2026, so the deck is for casual and Extra Regulation play.

Ratings

Strength as sold 1/5

ST01-001 Monkey.D.Luffy is a block 1 Leader, so the deck as sold cannot be played in Standard. Outside Standard it is a fair red beatdown deck, but several of its Characters, like Karoo and Nico Robin, have no effect at all.

Upgraded ceiling 3/5

This rates the Standard path through ST21-001 Monkey.D.Luffy, the newer red Luffy Leader that gives 2 rested DON!! to a Character once per turn. With the ST-21 and ST-31 Straw Hat Crew cards behind it, that Leader runs a coherent, playable red deck.

Difficulty to play 2/5

Most turns come down to attacking with big Characters and deciding where the Leader's extra DON!! card goes. The main decision is when to hold Guard Point and counters instead of spending everything on offense.

These are TurnZero HQ's own read of the cards, not tournament results or an official Bandai rating. How we rate starter decks →

How it plays

The deck wins by attacking every turn with Characters that are slightly bigger than they look. Early on, play 1- and 2-cost Characters such as Nami, Usopp and Brook, and use the Leader's effect to push one attacker past your opponent's Leader. Brook is the best turn-two play because its [On Play] gives 2 rested DON!! cards at once.

In the middle turns, Roronoa Zoro and Jinbe add pressure. Zoro becomes a 6000-power attacker with 1 DON!!, and Jinbe gives another card +1000 power when it attacks with 1 DON!!. Use Gum-Gum Jet Pistol on the Character that blocks or threatens you most, since it K.O.s anything with 6000 power or less.

The closing turn is usually the 5-cost Monkey.D.Luffy. It attacks the turn it is played, and with 2 DON!! attached your opponent cannot use [Blocker] during that battle. Diable Jambe does the same job for any {Straw Hat Crew} attacker, so save one for the turn you need an attack to land.

Tips for your first games

  • Use the Leader's effect before you attack, not after, since the DON!! card only helps the card that is about to battle.
  • Play Brook on a turn when you have rested DON!! cards to give, which usually means after you have played something else.
  • Keep Guard Point for the turn your opponent can take your last Life cards, because a +3000 counter is the strongest defense in the box.
  • Save Diable Jambe or the 5-cost Luffy for the turn your opponent relies on a [Blocker] to survive.
  • Tony Tony.Chopper is a 1-cost [Blocker] with no counter, so play it when you need a body in the way, not as a counter card in hand.

Upgrade guide

Every upgrade below is legal in Standard and shares a color with the Leader. Prices are each card's base printing on TCGplayer on October 10, 2026; open a card for today's price.

Budget red Straw Hat Crew Characters from ST-21

The cheapest way to improve the deck is to swap its vanilla Characters for ST-21 Straw Hat Crew cards that do something. ST21-009 Nami and ST21-012 Brook give 2 rested DON!! cards at a time, EB02-003 Tony Tony.Chopper gives 1 when it enters, and ST21-010 Nico Robin K.O.s a 4000-power Character when it attacks with 2 DON!!. Every card here is budget-priced and Standard-legal, so they keep working if you later move to the ST21-001 Leader. The cost is that the deck leans harder on DON!! giving, so a turn where you draw no givers is weaker.

Nami ST21-009$0.51
Brook ST21-012$0.28
Tony Tony.Chopper EB02-003$0.90
Nico Robin ST21-010$0.44
Usopp ST21-002$0.25

Move to the ST21-001 Monkey.D.Luffy Leader

To play red Luffy in Standard, replace the Leader with ST21-001 Monkey.D.Luffy, which gives up to 2 rested DON!! cards to one Character once per turn while it has 1 DON!! attached. It is the same plan as ST-01 at twice the rate, and it is also the Leader of ST-31. Add the newer Straw Hat Crew Characters that turn those DON!! cards into extra attacks: Sanji to stop blockers, Roronoa Zoro to refill the board when it is K.O.'d, and the 7-cost ST31-004 Monkey.D.Luffy as a finisher. OP01-016 Nami searches for any of them. This is the most expensive of the three ideas because the Leader and Nami cost more than the rest.

CardNumberPrice, October 10, 2026
Monkey.D.Luffy ST21-001$4.30
Nami OP01-016$5.08
Sanji ST21-003$1.75
Roronoa Zoro ST21-015$1.72
Monkey.D.Luffy ST31-004$2.12

More removal and better counters

ST-01 has two ways to remove a Character, so a single large blocker can stall it. These red Events fix that. Gum-Gum Mole Pistol gives -5000 power and can K.O. a small Character as well, Munch-Munch Mutation works on either player's turn, and Gum-Gum King Kong Gatling is a +3000 attack boost whose Trigger K.O.s a 5000-power Character. Gum-Gum Dawn Whip and I'd Never Shoot You!!!! replace Guard Point's role on defense. Adding Events means fewer Characters, so cut the vanilla Characters first.

What to cut first

Bandai's list doesn't say how many copies of each card the deck has, so cut by card: take out every copy of these before anything else, and keep the deck at exactly 50.

Every card in ST-01

Bandai's card list for ST-01 has 17 different cards. 16 of them carry a block 1 icon or are banned, so they can't be played in Standard; they are still legal in Extra Regulation unless banned. Legality follows Bandai's block icons and its banned list effective October 12, 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ST-01 legal in Standard?

No. The Leader and every card except ST01-011 Brook are block 1 cards, which rotated out of Standard on April 1, 2026. You can still play it casually or under Bandai's Extra Regulation.

Is ST-01 good?

As sold it is a simple red attack deck with few ways to remove Characters, and it cannot be played in Standard. It is still a good way to learn how giving DON!! cards works.

What replaced the ST-01 Luffy Leader?

ST21-001 Monkey.D.Luffy is the Standard-legal red Luffy Leader. It gives up to 2 rested DON!! cards to a Character once per turn, and it is also the Leader in ST-31.

Is ST-01 good for beginners?

Yes. The cards are mostly plain Characters and the Leader effect has one decision, so it teaches attacking, counters and DON!! cards without much else to track.
