ST-27 BLACK Marshall.D.Teach

Overview

ST-27 is a mono-black Blackbeard Pirates deck led by OP09-081 Marshall.D.Teach, a 5-Life Leader with 5000 power. Its first line negates your own On Play effects. Its second lets you trash a card from your hand during your turn so that your opponent's On Play effects are negated until the end of their next turn.

Because of that first line, the box is built from cards that do their work another way. Doc Q, Van Augur, Stronger, Catarina Devon and the 7-cost Marshall.D.Teach use Activate: Main abilities, several Characters draw a card when they are K.O.'d, and Laffitte and the Fullalead Stage dig for Blackbeard Pirates cards. ST27-004 Sanjuan.Wolf is the only card in the box with an On Play effect, and the Leader turns it off.

The box has 15 different cards, counting the Leader. It suits a player who likes interacting with the opponent's plan and predicting what they will play next, more than one who wants to play the biggest Character each turn.

How it plays

Black removal in this deck works by lowering a Character's cost and then K.O.ing it. Van Augur gives a Character −3 cost, Stronger gives −2 and draws a card, Catarina Devon gives −1, and Doc Q then K.O.s a Character with a cost of 1 or less. The 7-cost Marshall.D.Teach rests to K.O. a Character with a cost of 3 or less, so the same reductions widen what it can hit.

The Leader's ability is your answer to your opponent's strongest turns. When their next play is likely to be a Character with removal or card draw on its On Play, trash a card near the end of your Main Phase so that effect does nothing on their turn. It costs a card each time, so save it for turns when it stops something that matters.

Your trash fills from Fullalead, Stronger and the Leader's own cost. With 4 or more cards there, OP09-086 Jesus Burgess gains +1000 power for every 4 cards and cannot be K.O.'d by your opponent's effects, and ST27-004 Sanjuan.Wolf gains Blocker. ST27-003 Kuzan is a 6-cost Blocker that, when K.O.'d, plays a Blackbeard Pirates Character with a cost of 5 or less from your trash, rested.

Tips for your first games

• Use Van Augur, Stronger or Catarina Devon before Doc Q in the same turn; the cost reductions last until the end of the turn, and Doc Q only K.O.s a Character with a cost of 1 or less.
• Activate Laffitte and Fullalead early in your Main Phase so the cards they find can still be played that turn.
• ST27-001 Avalo Pizarro rests a Fullalead for its +4000 power, which competes with Fullalead's own search, so pick one use each turn.
• Don't trash a card to the Leader every turn. Save it for when your opponent has the DON!! for a Character whose On Play would change the game.

Budget Blackbeard Pirates Characters with no On Play to lose

Every Character you add to this deck should do its job without an On Play effect, and these five do. OP10-086 Shiryu K.O.s a Character with a base cost of 3 or less on the turn it is played and has +2000 power on your opponent's turn. PRB02-015 Shiryu is a Blocker with +4 cost under a Blackbeard Pirates Leader and K.O.s a base cost 4 or less Character when it is K.O.'d. OP10-082 Kuzan cannot be removed by your opponent's effects and can trash itself to draw a card and replay a Blackbeard Pirates 5-cost from your trash. OP09-082 Avalo Pizarro is a plain 6000-power 4-cost, and OP09-093 Marshall.D.Teach is a 10-cost Blocker that negates your opponent's Leader and one Character on the turn it is played. All five are budget singles.

Events, which the Leader does not negate

The Leader only negates On Play effects, so Events are the safest place to add removal and defense. OP09-096 My Era...Begins!! looks at 3 cards for a Blackbeard Pirates card and trashes the rest, which feeds Jesus Burgess and Sanjuan.Wolf. OP09-098 Black Hole negates a Character's effect and K.O.s it if its cost is 4 or less, OP09-097 Black Vortex is a counter that negates a Leader or Character and gives it −4000 power, and OP10-098 Liberation K.O.s two Characters when you are behind on board by 2 or more. OP08-096 People's Dreams Don't Ever End!! trashes the top card of your deck and gives +5000 power if that card has a cost of 6 or more. My Era...Begins!! and Liberation are budget cards; the other three cost a few dollars each. Cut Catarina Devon and Avalo Pizarro first.

What to cut first

Bandai's list doesn't say how many copies of each card the deck has, so cut by card: take out every copy of these before anything else, and keep the deck at exactly 50.
