ST-31 RED Monkey.D.Luffy is a mono-red Straw Hat Crew deck. Its Leader is a reprint of ST21-001 Monkey.D.Luffy: 5000 power, 5 Life, and, with 1 DON!! attached, a once-per-turn ability to give up to 2 rested DON!! cards to one of your Characters. That turns the DON!! you spent playing cards into extra power for the attack.

The box has 15 different cards, and most are reprints of known Straw Hat Crew cards: OP01-016 Nami, OP14-015 Roronoa Zoro, OP11-009 Nico Robin and others. The new cards lean on the Leader. Sanji (ST31-001) and Jinbe (ST31-002) each draw a card and play another Straw Hat Crew card from hand, Brook (ST31-003) becomes a 6000-power [Blocker] once you have 3 or more given DON!!, and the 7-cost Monkey.D.Luffy (ST31-004) gains [Rush] under the same condition.

It suits a newer player who wants an aggressive deck with clear, readable choices. Every Character shares the Straw Hat Crew type, so search effects rarely miss.

Every card in ST-31 is legal in Standard, including reprints of older cards such as OP01-016 Nami.

Ratings

Strength as sold 3/5

The Leader's DON!! boost, Sanji and Jinbe's draw-and-play effects, and searchers like Nami and Thousand Sunny give it a clear plan, but its removal is limited to small −power effects from Gum-Gum Gatling Gun and Nico Robin.

Upgraded ceiling 4/5

Red has a deep, mostly budget Straw Hat Crew pool built for this exact Leader, from ST21-009 Nami to ST21-017 Gum-Gum Mole Pistol, so the deck gains real removal and more DON!! payoffs without changing its plan.

Difficulty to play 2/5

Most turns are about where to put DON!!, and the payoffs are easy to read: Brook and the 7-cost Luffy each want 3 or more given DON!! on the field.

How it plays

The early turns are about searching and building a board. Nami and the Thousand Sunny stage each look at 5 cards for a Straw Hat Crew card, and the 1-cost Monkey.D.Luffy (ST23-004) can rest itself to shrink an opposing Character. From turn 3 or 4, use the Leader's ability to put 2 rested DON!! onto a Character so it attacks well above its printed power.

In the middle turns, Sanji and Jinbe do the heavy lifting. Sanji draws and plays a Straw Hat Crew Character with a cost of 5 or less from your hand, and gains [Rush] with 2 DON!! attached. Jinbe is a [Blocker] that draws and plays a 1-cost Straw Hat Crew card such as Nami or Thousand Sunny for free.

The finish is the 7-cost Monkey.D.Luffy or Roronoa Zoro. Luffy gives −1000 power for every Straw Hat Crew card on your field, and gains [Rush] with 3 or more given DON!!, while Zoro has [Rush] printed on it. Thousand Sunny can give one more rested DON!! to a Luffy for the last attack.

Tips for your first games

  • Use the Leader's ability before you attack, since it needs 1 DON!! attached to the Leader and moves DON!! that are already rested.
  • Count given DON!! before ending your turn: with 3 or more on the field, Brook gains [Blocker] and +3000 on your opponent's turn.
  • Play Sanji with a Straw Hat Crew Character already in hand, so its effect puts a second body on the field for free.
  • Save Nami or Thousand Sunny in hand when you plan to play Jinbe, since Jinbe plays a 1-cost Straw Hat Crew card.
  • Play the 7-cost Luffy when you have the most Straw Hat Crew cards on the field, because its −1000 effect scales with that count.

Budget ST-21 Straw Hats

ST-21, the deck this Leader first came from, has cheap Straw Hat Crew Characters built around given DON!!. Nami and Brook move more rested DON!! onto your Characters, Nico Robin K.O.s a 4000-power or smaller Character when attacking with 2 DON!!, and Roronoa Zoro gains [Rush] with 2 DON!! and replaces itself when K.O.'d. They replace the 1-cost Luffy, Franky and Usopp, and every card here is budget-priced.

Red removal

ST-31's only removal is −power on attack and from Gum-Gum Gatling Gun. These Straw Hat Crew Events let the deck answer a blocker or a large Character before the attack. Gum-Gum Mole Pistol and Gum-Gum UFO cost a little more; the other three are budget. The cost is a few counter cards, so keep enough 1000- and 2000-counter Characters to defend.

Gum-Gum Mole Pistol ST21-017$2.84

Rush finishers

For more pressure, add Characters that attack the turn they land or make the Leader's DON!! go further. ST21-014 Monkey.D.Luffy has [Rush] and passes a rested DON!! on every attack, OP11-016 Roronoa Zoro gives another rested DON!! each turn, and ST21-003 Sanji stops blockers for a 6000-power attacker. These two Luffy and Zoro cards are the most expensive upgrades here; Sanji and Chopper are cheaper.
