ST-28 is a green and yellow Land of Wano deck led by OP06-022 Yamato, a 4-Life Leader with 5000 power and Double Attack, so each hit from the Leader removes 2 of your opponent's Life cards. Its other ability works once your opponent has 3 or fewer Life cards: once per turn, it gives 2 rested DON!! to one of your Characters.

Most of the box is yellow Akazaya Nine Characters from OP06 with the same Trigger: if your opponent has 3 or fewer Life cards when the card is revealed from your Life, you play it for free. The Leader's Double Attack is how you get your opponent to 3 Life early, so those Triggers turn on sooner than in most Trigger decks. Green adds OP09-035 Portgas.D.Ace, which rests an opposing Character when you have 2 or more rested Characters.

The box has 15 different cards, counting the Leader. It suits a player who wants to attack from the first turn and is comfortable with a deck that trades some defense for speed.

Every card in ST-28 is legal in Standard, including the OP06, OP07 and OP09 reprints.

Ratings

Strength as sold 3/5

Double Attack pushes your opponent to 3 Life quickly, which turns on the Akazaya Nine Triggers, the Leader's DON!! ability and Inuarashi's K.O. Defense is thin, though: Kawamatsu, Kikunojo, Denjiro and ST28-004 Kouzuki Momonosuke have no counter.

Upgraded ceiling 3/5

Newer Land of Wano cards like EB03-057 Yamato and EB04-012 Kikunojo give DON!! to the Leader or let it attack twice, and green adds removal. The Leader's own ability still waits on your opponent's Life and gives DON!! only to Characters, which keeps the ceiling at a solid casual deck.

Difficulty to play 2/5

The plan is to attack with the Leader and let Triggers carry the defense. The main thing to track is your opponent's Life count, since Ashura Doji wants 3 or more and most other cards want 3 or less.

How it plays

Early on, ST28-005 Yamato looks at 5 cards for a Land of Wano card with a cost of 2 or more, and ST28-001 Ashura Doji K.O.s a Character with a base cost of 5 or less while your opponent still has 3 or more Life. Attack with the Leader each turn; two Double Attack hits put your opponent at 1 Life from a 5-Life start.

Once your opponent is at 3 or fewer, the deck changes gear. The Leader gives 2 rested DON!! to a Character each turn, which powers the DON!! x2 abilities on Inuarashi, Nekomamushi, Denjiro and ST28-002 Izo. Inuarashi trashes a card when attacking to K.O. a Character with a cost no higher than your opponent's Life count, and Blaze Slice rests a cost 4 or less Character once they have 2 or fewer.

Each Akazaya Nine card revealed from your Life now enters play for free, so your opponent's attacks refill your board. Close the game with the Leader, using ST28-002 Izo to give it Banish on the turn your opponent's last Life cards could hold Triggers of their own.

Tips for your first games

  • Play ST28-001 Ashura Doji before your opponent drops to 2 Life, because its K.O. needs them at 3 or more.
  • Remember that Double Attack also hands your opponent 2 Life cards per hit, so expect their hand to grow quickly.
  • Use the Leader's DON!! on Inuarashi when its K.O. matters most: the number it can reach falls as your opponent's Life falls.
  • ST28-002 Izo gives your Land of Wano Leader Banish for the turn, so Triggers in your opponent's Life are trashed instead of activating.

Budget: give DON!! to the Double Attack Leader

The box gives DON!! only to Characters, but the Leader is the card that deals 2 damage per hit. EB03-057 Yamato gives 3 rested DON!! to your Land of Wano Leader when it enters, and EB03-016 Kouzuki Hiyori trashes itself to give 1 rested DON!! to the Leader. EB04-012 Kikunojo sets your Land of Wano Leader active on the turn it is played, which means a second Double Attack that turn. OP10-028 Kouzuki Momonosuke trashes itself to look at 5 cards for up to 2 Akazaya Nine cards, keeping the Trigger count high. All four are budget singles; cut Kawamatsu, ST13-016 Yamato and the OP06 Kikunojo for them.

Green rest-and-K.O. removal

Green removal works on rested Characters, and Double Attack decks often face boards they need to clear. OP06-036 Ryuma and OP15-036 Ryuma K.O. a rested Character with a cost of 4 or less, the first on play and on K.O., the second on play and when attacking. OP12-024 Gyukimaru rests a Character with a base cost of 6 or less when attacking with 3 or more given DON!!, which the Leader's ability helps you reach. OP12-022 Inuarashi stops a rested Character from standing up in its next Refresh Phase, and OP08-038 We Would Never Sell a Comrade to an Enemy!!! protects your Characters from effect K.O.s for a turn. All five are budget cards. This package adds green, so it costs some Akazaya Nine Triggers.

Yellow Blockers and counters for the race

The box's weakest point is defense, since several Characters have no counter. OP06-107 Kouzuki Momonosuke is a Blocker that adds one of your Land of Wano Characters to your Life face-up, and OP13-104 Kouzuki Hiyori is a Blocker that, with a multicolored Leader like Yamato, trashes a card when K.O.'d to add a card to your Life. OP10-115 Let's Meet Again in the New World is a +4000 counter whose Trigger K.O.s a Character with a cost up to your opponent's Life count, and OP10-116 Damned Punk K.O.s a cost 5 or less Character after letting you rearrange a Life card. All four are budget singles; cut ST28-004 Kouzuki Momonosuke and Denjiro if you need room.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ST-28 good?

ST-28 is a coherent aggressive starter: the Double Attack Leader gets your opponent to 3 Life quickly, and the Akazaya Nine Triggers reward that. TurnZero HQ rates it 3 of 5 as sold and 3 of 5 with upgrades, because the Leader's ability stays conditional.

Is ST-28 legal in Standard?

Yes. Every card in ST-28 is legal in Standard.

What should I upgrade first in ST-28?

Add EB03-057 Yamato and EB04-012 Kikunojo, which give DON!! to the Leader and let it attack twice. Both are budget cards.

Is ST-28 good for beginners?

Yes. The plan is to attack with the Leader every turn, and most decisions come down to your opponent's Life count, which makes it one of the easier starters to learn.
